Nokia Lumia Camera Comparison – PureView V PoorView

Firstly I may have chosen a disingenuous title for this piece, as the main purpose , apart from my last chance to use the loan Lumia 1320 I have been using thanks to Nokia Connects for a blog post, is to show how surprisingly good and capable the standard 5 megapixel camera on the Lumia 1320 is in most situations compared to my camera 'Flagship' Lumias 1520 & 1020. Not everyone is either bothered about the best possible quality photos you can take or has the budget to buy the best possible camera smartphone on the market. My main purpose is to show that to add to the overall good experience on the mid range Lumia 1320 you can get good , consistent photographs from this big screened beast which are good enough to share with friends and to keep as great memories.

Kind of a method :-)

For this comparison,I have taken a lot of photos with the the Lumias 1020, 1320 and 1520 and tried to make as similar as possible ,and for the purposes of this piece, everything has been taken in auto 'point and shoot' although I used touch to focus on most of the close up pics, something which was actually easier on the 1320 than on the higher end Lumia's , although with the higher end phones you have the opportunity to refocus/reframe using the 'PureView' technology on the more expensive handsets.

I'll try group the sets in different situations and label the shots and I hope you find this at the very least, interesting as uploading and editing photos takes quite a while to do :)

Cropped comparison

Because it seems to be the thing to do, I have cropped and pasted some of the photos to allow comparison of the three cameras close together, bit rough and ready, but I think it allows a comparison.

Well that's about it, the Lumia 1320 is due to move on to the next lucky trialist in the next few days and I have thoroughly enjoyed using it, it will work hard all day long and do everything expected to a good standard. The Lumia 1320 is a nice, big, phone.

Thanks for reading and looking at the photos.

I just saw this, since I have the 1320 and think I should spend quite a bit of cash to move up to the 1520. Excellent work, and thank you for putting it up.

I also think the 1320 is a very good device overall. I enjoy it thoroughly, except for the camera. Yes, the photos are really, really fine when resampled to fit on any screen, but they deteriorate quickly when any zooming is used at all. I see exactly that in your photos above. As long as you are looking at the entire image on a computer, they're fine. But fuzziness and noise are apparent in every other shot.

I'm not getting the 1520 until I sell my 1320, which could be a while yet, but I think in the end, since I'm a photography buff, and love having my camera with me at all times, I'm going to really love the 1520. I had the 1020 and know how good it can be.

Thanks Andy, really just to show that the 1320 really doesn't take bad photos, but as you say, I'm happier with 1020 results, but no one handset covers everyones requirements or budget :)

Fantastic comparison mate - I'm actually really interested by the 1520's warmish hue on those photos. Good quality, but boy does it make me glad I've got a 1020! Not sure about the quality of the pics I took with the 1320 when I had it - the photos did seem fuzzy and noisy, but then again, you're more of a dab hand than me, so perhaps you got more out of it. As always, lovely write up and great arrangement of photos to make it easy for the reader. Top marks, SQ! :^)
