How to turn on/off email threads on the iPad or iPhone

Updated on August 9, 2010

The iPad, iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 or newer email program can read messages in a threaded format. Threaded email is a great feature to follow long email conversation as they keep messages with the same subjects together for easier mail reading. This is particularly useful if you reading long email threads or subscribe to large mailing lists.

Step 1

Start the “Settings” application.

Step 2

Go down to the third grouping of options and select the “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” option.

Step 3

Scroll down the screen to the third grouping of options under Mail. You will see a “Organized By Thread” switch. To switch the off email threads, turn the switch to “off”. To turn it back on, turn the switch to “on”. When threaded emails is on, all emails with the same subject are grouped together for easier reading. When it is off, emails are organized by when the are received.

I've turned the Organize by Thread option on, however, it is not grouping by subject as its listed in these instructions. I have an iPhone 4 with the latest OS. Any recommendations as to how this can be corrected? I have my gmail account set up through exchange. The messages thread fine when I log into the web but just not on the phone.
