I want to blog! Now I need to know how.

Updated on February 12, 2009

Choosing a subject

If you want to blog and blog effectively, you need a topic or some idea what you want to blog about. Are you keeping a fun record of your family life? Do you want to blog about your favorite hobby? Are you a news junky? A political maven? Religion? Art? Science? It's probably better, if you want regular readers, to narrow down a category to work from. That doesn't mean you can run outside that framework from time to time, but typically a blog should have some set of guidelines.

I have my subject, now what?

Now you choose how you want to write and publish your blog. There are probably as many ways to do that as there are sites on the internet, so I'll pretend that you are a brand-new beginner to the idea of blogging and I'll tell you the easiest ways to get going: a free site that lets you blog about anything and everything.

There are quite a few online, two of the largest are

http://www.blogger.com/

and

http://www.livejournal.com

These are two of the most popular ways to blog, but just about every social networking site has blogs, like MySpace, Tribe, Cafe Mom, Delphi Forums and so on. Take some time to look through the options and decide what meets your needs.

I'll walk through setting up a blog at Blogger, to show how easy it can be to get started blogging.

Starting off with Blogger

Blogger is part of Google now, so if you don't have a Google account you'll need to set one up now. This gives you access to some amazing tools like Picassa (a photo and video site), Blogger, GMail and a world of other useful programs and websites.

Once you've signed in at Blogger with your Google account you'll see a button labeled "Create a blog". After you click you'll be prompted to create a title for your blog, it's own person URL (http://IHaveABlogNow.blogspot.com, for example), and other information. It's a fairly simply setup and once you have your new blog you'll be given the opportunity to create your first entry.

Now I'm Blogging!

Once you start exploring the world of Blogger you'll find that there are almost endless ways to personalize it. You can use a variety of different templates, you can modify it with all sorts of widgets and text block, you can even hook up with Google Ad Sense and start making money with the traffic that comes through your doors.

Blogging is a great way to express yourself and keep in touch with the world. The need to write new entries can spur you to learn more about your topic and keep on the cutting edge of your interests and hobbies. You can reach people, teach, inspire, illuminate and encourage conversation. Enjoy your new found information liberation!

Thank you Teresa for your nice and very informative hub. I will try to understand and utilize it as guide in writing one. I'm pretty sure not only me will benefit from this brilliant product of yours but a host of others as well.
