International Phone Dialing Codes – and List of Internet Top Level Domains - TLD Domains List

The world body that coordinates the standards for telecommunications is called International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. ITU started with the formation of the International Telegraph Union in 1865 and became a United Nations agency in 1947.

Every country has a phone calling code defined by ITU and that code is called International Direct Dialling (IDD) or International Subscriber Dialling (ISD). This phone calling code is what you need to make an international call.

1. Get the international call prefix. International dialing prefix is specific to the country you are calling from and it’s usually "00" or "011" or “000” for almost all countries. You dial the dialling prefix number first.

2. Get the country phone dialing code of the country you want to call. This code can be between 1 digit number to 3 digit number. This is the number you dial immediately after step 1 above.

3. Call the number that may have been provided to you by the person you want to call. This would usually include the area code/city code and the local number of the person you want to call

Example: We want to call John Smith in London, UK, when we are in US and Mr John Smith has given his telephone number as (020) 8123456X.

1. We dial 011 - International dialling prefix for US

2. We dial 44 - International Phone Dialling Code for UK

3. We dial 20 8123456X – omitting the zero in front of that number

If we want to call John Smith using a mobile phone (cell phone), we do it as follows:

1. Just dial plus (+), the country code, area code and the phone number as follows +44 20 8123456X and you are done.

With the coming up of the internet, many abbreviations have come with it. For example, what do we call .com (dot Com) thing we all seem to use when we talk of internet in the URL extension? That .com (dot com) thing is what is called Top Level Domain. A top level domain is therefore an identification label that defines administrative autonomy and control on the internet which is based on the Domain Name System (DNS).

Other than .COM, we do also have .GOV, .EDU, .ORG, and .NET. This category of top level domains is now called generic top-level domains. There are others top level domain coding such as .US, .UK, .NZ, .BR, .AU, .FR, .JP, .CN, .ZA, etc., which are abbreviated using two-letter ISO country code. These are called country-code top-level domains.

In the generic top-level domains, we have the following entities defined against the name of the top level domain.

1. .AERO – For use in the air transport industry

2. .BIZ - business enity which is open for anybody to register and use

3. .COM - Commercial entity which is open for anybody to register and use

4. .COOP - Cooperatives entity

5. .EDU - Education entity and limited to institutions of learning.

6. .GOV – Government entity and limited to use by government

7. .INFO – Information and open for anybody to register and use

8. .INT - International and limited to organizations endorsed by a treaty between nations

9. .JOBS – for established companies with jobs to advertise

10. .MOBI – for mobile devices

11. .MUSEUM – limited for use by museums

12. .NAME – Name enity and open for registration and use by an individual name

13. .NET - Network entity which is open for anybody to register and use

14. .ORG – Organization entity which is for anybody to register and use

15. .PRO –professions entity which is for certified professionals like doctors, lawyers and accountants to register and use.
