Most Useful Mac Apps

Updated on August 8, 2015

Calibre

Download: Here

App Store Rating: None

Price: Free

My Review: If you're the kind of person who has a lot of ebooks on your laptop then this is definitely an app you need to download. Calibre organises, filters, converts, and shares your books along with a variety of other things. This app also has a lot of very useful add-ons that you can use to customise it to your liking. This is a fantastic app, easy to use, and does everything you could possibly need it to without any difficulty. This app can easily handle tens of thousands of ebooks, allowing you to access them easily and edit them as needed. A brilliant app, definitely worth downloading.

Fantastical 2

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 4.5/5

Price: $39.99

My Review: The native mac calendar is good, there's nothing specifically wrong with it, but it can't be compared to Fantastical 2. This calendar app just comes out leaps and bounds above mac's calendar app. It's more attractive, easier to use, and just seems to work a lot better. The mini app version of Fantastical which is pinned to your menu bar is great, and makes creating reminders or events much simpler. This app is a little pricey, but if you use the calendar on your mac a lot, then this is definitely worth upgrading to.

Google Drive

Download: Here

App Store Rating: None

Price: Free (15GB)

My Review: Let's be honest, no computer is infallible, and it's always better to be safe than sorry and back up all your documents. Google Drive makes it easy to do this by putting a folder right in your finder and letting you just save documents directly there, uploading them to your drive for you. I personally prefer this app to the alternatives like dropbox, as the website is much nicer and you get a lot more storage space with the free plan.

Parallels

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 5/5

Price: $79.95

My Review: Having a Macbook is both a blessing and a curse. It's an amazing computer, however there is still a lot of software which doesn't have a mac version yet, making it difficult to run some programs. That's where Parallels comes in, a way of booting up Windows, Linux, or any other operating system within a window on your mac. This software is an absolute lifesaver, and works amazingly. It's much better than using apple's Boot Camp to try and dual boot Windows on your mac, and if you ever find yourself wishing there was an apple version of a specific piece of software all you have to do is download this and you'll be able to run anything you want, directly from you mac. It's worth the hefty price, and you'll never regret buying it.

ClipMenu

Download: Here

App Store Rating: None

Price: Free

My Review: This useful little clipboard manager has saved my life more times than I can count. This keeps track of the last 20 things you copied, storing them in case you need to retrieve them. This simple app is a must have for any mac owner, and I'd highly suggest downloading it as soon as possible to save yourself a lot of time and stress.

Gestimer

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 4.5/5

Price: $2.99

My Review: If you're anything like me then you often lose track of time, and you know your time management could use a bit of work. If that sounds anything like you then this little app is for you. Sitting neatly in your menu bar, Gestimer makes setting reminders simple and fun. I'd highly suggest buying this app, it really is a bargain, and will make time management easy.

ProVoc

Download: Here

App Store Rating: None

Price: Free

My Review: This app is actually no longer being updated, and was abandoned a few years ago. However it still remains one of my favourite flashcard apps, and in my opinion works better than most of the paid alternatives. If you're looking for a flash card app which is simple, has all the bells and whistles you could possible need, and works very well, then this is the app to look out for. Particularly useful for learning languages, this app is quite brilliant, and absolutely worth downloading.

Daum Equation Editor

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 4.5/5

Price: Free

My Review: If you find yourself working with equations for work, school, or even just in your free time, then this is a must have app on your mac. Working with equations on a mac historically leaves you with very few options, and tends to be a painful experience. However this app makes the experience painless and simple, by combining a brilliant interface with all the tools you could possibly need.

DaisyDisk

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 5/5

Price: $9.99

My Review: If you're anything like me, then your mac seems to get cluttered faster than you can tidy it, and you're constantly wondering where all your hard drive space went. This app is perfect for figuring that out, and keeping your mac clean. DaisyDisk analyses the space on your mac and tells you exactly what is taking up all the space, displaying the results in an easy to understand graphic, and making managing those files simple. This app is incredibly useful for keeping your mac uncluttered, and is absolutely worth the money.

TimeWorks

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 4.5/5

Price: $9.99

My Review: This cute little app is wonderful if you're the kind of person who is constantly making use of your mac calendar. This app displays all your calendar events on a neat timeline on your desktop, making them easy to keep track of and remember. While this app is not really an alternative to a calendar app, it is a great add on to make the mac calendar experience even better, and is completely worth buying.

MenuTab Pro for Facebook

Download: Here

App Store Rating: 4.5/5

Price: $1.99

My Review: Facebook is a way of life for most people in this day and age, and few people don't have an account that they keep track of daily. This app just helps with that process, taking Facebook and putting it in a cute little app which is pinned to your menu bar, making accessing it easy. With all the functionality of Facebook in your browser, this app just makes it more accessible and customisable. If you have a Facebook account which you use daily, then this app is absolutely worth the price.
