Operation Facebook by the Anonymous Group - Will it Succeed?

Updated on November 19, 2011

Impending Attack on Facebook?

It seems that not everybody is a big fan of Facebook. Around a month ago, a YouTube user named FacebookOp (from Afghanistan?) uploaded a video titled “Message from Anonymous: Operation Facebook, Nov 5 2011”. Within a short period it has amassed more than 2 million views. The message warns that Facebook would be destroyed by Anonymous on November 5th, 2011. Now, why would anybody wants to do that? Well, the answer is in the transcript that accompany the video. Although the original user account was banned and video removed from youtube, you can still find many uploads of the same message from other accounts.

The Anonymous Group, were responsible for massive cyber attacks on News Corp, Pentagon, and others, earlier. Now they have vowed to destroy Facebook. Recently, they also claimed responsibility for the DDoS attack on the website of the Spanish Police.

Why Anonymous Chose November 5th

Although it is not sure whether this threat is initiated by the Anonymous Group, there was an earlier OpFacebook that was abandoned, and this may just be a try at reviving it. Now, why they chose the date November 5? I guess it can be attributed to the comics V for Vendetta, where the central character "V" executes his major plans every 5th of November. Or it may be attributed to Guy Fawkes was a conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot. He was captured on a November 5, and eventually hanged.

I am sure that more theories and reports will be forthcoming in the next few days. Anyway, below is the original video and full transcript of the attack warning that facebook will be destroyed on November 5, 2011.

Is it a Hoax? What will happen to facebook on November 5th?

Whether anyone will attack facebook and succeed in destroying it on November 5, or not, I am sure that the social media will keep itself very busy speculating and creating more stories and buzz about this news story. Do you think this attack is going to happen? Can facebook withstand a cyber attack by hackers? Even if someone tries it, will it happen on November 5 this year? If facebook is attacked on that date will the perpetrators succeed? Leave your answers below.

Even though this anonymous group has not been able to destroy the Facebook, it is now well known to all that America has sponsored spying on the private lives of the people using Facebook and other social network sites. That shows that that government has no respect for the private life of the people in the world.

Guys, you are really that smart. Your coneecting points that do not exist. Anonymous has been around as long as the internet, they have nothing to do with 4chan anymore. If anonymous threatened anyone, then no matter what their victim will get hurt in some way. Facebook deserves it. They will fail but we will prevail.

Eh, I don't think it'll happen. This'll be like when 4chan threatened to take over Tumblr, but in the end, nothing happened.

Still, changing my safety settings until this blows over.

Anonymous (The Hacker organization) will attack Facebook (not you). They will attempt to make accessing the site impossible by users.

I don't really use my facebook near as much anymore anyways, and I'm curious as to how google+ would work. So long as these guys don't try to steal my info while they're destroying Facebook, It won't really affect me.

That said, as an internet freelancer, I can't say I condone any acts of cyber-terrorism.

sounds kind of like a bunch of 4chan radicals. Even the statements in red appear as if they come right off of 4chan's forums (google "rules of the internet"), and we all know 4chan is a big promoter of anonymity on the internet.

      I'll be paying attention.
