Otterbox Defender Series F Apple iPad Case & Stand Review

Updated on January 3, 2011

Apple iPad stand and case review

There are literally hundreds of Apple iPad cases, however if you want a quality protective case that also improves the iPad by allowing you to use it as a stand, then Otterbox Defender Series F for Apple iPad has something for you. At $65 it is not the cheapest case in the world, so do you get what you pay for? Lets see in this review of this premium iPad case / iPad stand.

Manufacturers Blurb:

"Drop-proof your magical, new must-have gadget with the OtterBox Defender Series for Apple® iPad™! This cutting-edge case incorporates three layers of hardcore protection plus some advanced features. Stowing your iPad away for the night or for your commute? Simply remove the back polycarbonate cover and snap it over the face for ultimate touch screen protection"

Not just a Premium iPad case but a Stand too

Many users find the iPad a superb device for watching downloaded TV and films on. However unlike a netbook, you cannot rest it on a table or on your chest in bed (my personal favourite) to watch in comfort. This is where the Otterbox Defender comes into its own. A simple flip and your iPad becomes perfectly angled to watch films. It is a really comfortable angle and the case has a silicone grip bottom so it wont slide about. The Otterbox makes it feel secure and stable unlike some stands cum cases for the iPad.

Problems with this iPad case?

Very few. However one issue, which can be solved for $1 is the lack of a built in screen protector. This may change in model updates, but at $60 for the case it is a little disappointing to not have a built in one. This would give your Apple iPad great all in one protection, and combined with the usefulness of the stand most of what you could ever want from a case for your iPad. It wouldn't stop me from buying an Otterbox Defender, if anything it shows how small you have to look for faults with this great case.

It really looks great. The feel of the material is second to none at this price range. Plus you do not have to remove it to dock so its hardly a faff that you need to think about. Just slot in and go. However, unfortunately you do need to open a cover to charge the iPad. This is a bit of a let down as it leaves a decent part of the iPad unprotected while charging or syncing.

Due to the materials used you actually feel like you have better grip on the iPad than standard. Speaking of the materials it is made of a polycarbonate shell, and a softer silicone skin. All you need to know is that it feels robust and it gives the impression that it protect your investment much more than most cases on the market.

Summary - Otterbox Defender iPad Case

Despite some minor flaws this is a superb iPad case, and one of the best I have seen on the market. Its protection is fantastic, while it arguably enhances the look of the device itself, especially when in movie viewing stand mode. The stand is a great feature, which is simple but very effective. Some people may like to see the stand work in portrait but 99% of the time you want a stand is for film / TV watching, and for this it shines thanks to that great viewing angle and simplicity. This is a premium quality iPad case, and one I can recommend to anyone who is starting to find it an in-expendable gadget!
