SATELLITE CHANNELS ARE A THREAT TO OUR OWN CULTURE

The word culture indicates the customs and beliefs, art, way of life and social organization of a particular country or group. Every nation has its own culture and of course, we have a very rich culture which we can feel proud of. But it is a shocking fact that our culture is now under a great threat because of satellite channels. There is no denying that satellite channels are a great source of our enjoyment but our young generation are so much affected and influenced by those channels that they are trying to practice what they see on the television screen. Forgetting our own tradition and culture we are gradually becoming more prone to the western culture. So, satellite channels are now turning as a threat rather than mere source of enjoyment.

The age we are living in is greatly marked with scientific inventions and technological revolution. Satellite communication is a gift to of modern science. But it has both negative and positive sides. No sides can’t be ignored easily.

In our country satellite channels were allowed to broadcast program in 1992. Many of them are Hindi channels. Some of them are English channels; some are Arabic channels etc. currently we have many Bengali channels. Besides the govt. is giving permission for more Bengali channels.

In the present context of the world, culture of a country is not confined to a territorial barrier. For satellite channels one country’s people are getting used to another s culture very easily. But this adaption of other culture forgetting their own, it might be a disastrous factor for them because culture means the origin of a nation, of a country.

All over the world there is the touch of western culture because western countries are economically richer than another one. So they like their cultures to achieve victory over others. As they have a good many numbers of satellite channels, they can do it easily.

We, the Bangladesh, have a long tradition of an enriched culture. Historically our culture is indispensable in our everyday life. But it is a matter of sorrow that with the passage of time it has been found decadent. Gradually we are losing our Bengali norms and customs which is really a shameful matter. And this is because the effect of foreign satellite channels. Seeing the foreign cultures through dish antenna us, especially our young generation is being misguided and is forgetting their own culture.

Our young generation enjoys foreign programs with great attraction ignoring our own cultural programs. Besides they are getting used to the foreign lifestyle also which is actually fake to our social norms and values.

Adopting another culture is not bad if we can value our own culture. If we fail to preserve our own culture, it would bring an utter destruction to our social and economic life. So foreign cultures as well as satellite channels are a threat to our own culture values.
