What Is Twitter

Updated on July 7, 2011

What is Twitter anyways?

You're probably sick and tired of hearing everyone talk about Twitter and not having any clue what they mean.  Don't feel bad.  There's tons of people out there who still don't know what Twitter is.

Twitter is a popular social networking site based around one question and one question only.  That question is "What are you doing?"  People have reported that reading about what their friends and family are up to all day long has magically made them feel closer to those people who matter to them.

Instead of having ''friends'' like you do on MySpace and Facebook, Twitter uses a system called ''followers.''  Whereas when you become friends with someone on one of the other aforementioned social networking sites, you instantly are alerted of each others new activity, Twitter's system is more one sided.  For example, I can click to 'follow' someone on Twitter and, while I am constantly being updated about their activity, they will not be informed of mine, unless they click to follow me as well.

Why is Twitter useful?

Obviously it's a great way to keep in touch with your friends and family, for starters.  With one click of a button, you can broadcast ''At the zoo with my daughter.  She just dropped her ice cream cone," or something else ridiculously adorable like that.  It helps you and your family who may be living far away all feel close and connected to each other 24/7.

Secondly, it is an excellent tool for business as well.  It is a reliable means of communicating vital information regarding upcoming meetings or promotions in your company to co-workers quickly and efficiently.  It's also a great way to keep customers updated on posted on your newest developments in the company.

How to Join Twitter

Simply head over to their website.  When you land on the main page, the right hand side of the screen will say 'New To Twitter?'

Enter the information requested in the three boxes below and hit 'Sign Up'.  It wants you to enter your full name, email address and desired password.  The rest is very self explanatory.  If you need any help, just ask me in the comment section below and I will respond ASAP!
