What is so special in Xiomi Mi3-Should you buy it?

Updated on August 22, 2014

Gadget Review : Xiomi Mi3

What aroused my interest in the gadget was its unprecedented and more than expected pre-sales bookings on the e-tailer Flipkart.

First round of sales went out of stock after 40 minutes (not many people would have been aware of it by then). But once people got to know that there exists a beast as Xiomi Mi3 at a price worth nothing (I say this when comparing the Mi3 and its features to other "Brands" flagship devices of similar specs)-the sales went out of stock in times like:

  • 2nd Round of sale: took 5 seconds
  • 3rd one was quick to go out in 2 seconds
  • 4th was also quick if not quicker than previous one 2.4 seconds
  • 5th went off in just 2.3 seconds
  • 6th round will be open for sale on 26th Aug 12:30 GMT (6:00 PM IST)

and I think it might also not last for more than 3-5 seconds max, considering the fact that more than 150000 people have registered in advance for the 20K or so devices that would be up for sale. Which makes the equation something like there will be 7 people eyeing to book one Xiomi Mi3 device.

At first I was not attracted towards this device, but when I saw the selling out figures and numbers, I thought I'd better check out-whats so unique in this phone about which everyone is so mad about?

So here's my take of what the device is all about and what users can expect out of it:

Black Xiomi Mi3

Its a beast of a device

With a "Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 8274AB 2.3GHz processor, Adreno 330 450MHz GPU, 2GB LPDDR3 RAM, and eMMC 4.5 flash memory" it really is a beast. The specs are taken directly as they are mentioned on the Flipkart website.

Now let us interpret what each of this means to you-the user. The Snapdragon 800 processor with a clock-frequency of 2.3 GHz- that is the frequency at which my first computer used to run 7 years back. The 450 MHz GPU promises great graphical and gaming experience for gamers. The 2 GB DDR3 beats the laptops of mid-range prices-and will ensure lightening quick speed for the device. So its laced with latest high-tech infrastructure to give you a powerful experience.

Amazing display resolution

Xiomi Mi3 comes with a 5-inch screen having 1080p IPS LCD with a display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It has also got a anti-glare coating which will make sure your eyes are comfortable while operating the phone for long hours. A pixel density of 441 ppi (pixels per inch) will make sure that you get the best of video playing experience on this device.

Camera and capturing prowess

The Xiomi Mi3 comes with a 13 Megapixel front camera, with a Exmor sensor and Back Side Illumination (BSI). It allows you to record a video at 1080P full HD resoltuion and relish your memories for later. Even the front camera which is of 2 MP only is enabled with 1080P recording, so that you can enjoy fully HD video calls with you dear ones.

Latest connectivity features

The Xiomi Mi3 device has goot all the best connectivity features you can ask for and that too in its latest avatar. Say bluetooth it has 4.0, say wifi and it has Wifi Direct, Wifi-display and Wifi tethering on the go. Supports NFC, DLNA and any other connectivity feature you can think of.

Battery and Storage

All this is fueled by a 3050 mAH battery, which is more than enough for even this kind of a device. Remember most of the high end devices are also coming bundled with only 2000 to 2250 mAH batteries. It has a 16 GB of inbuilt memory and the latest version of android with some applied effects customised by Xiomi in its in-house laboratory, but we hope it is just as awesome as its build qulaity which has been compared to Apple and the likes.

Overall take

At just 13999 INR (about $230), Xiomi Mi3 is a steal. Given its features which even leave some of the high-end branded and flagship devices behind there should be no surprise that the device is so hot in the market and buyers are so eager to own it.

However before closing this review I would like to warn my readers about one flip side that the Xiomi Mi3 may have and that is its service. I hope you dont need it ever, but this would be one area where Xiomi will be thouroughly tested by the Indian buyers. Only time will tell if Xiomi can shake-off the typical image of a Chinese product from the minds of conservative Indian buyers.

Will you buy a Xiomi Mi3 device?
