What is the Thesis Theme for Wordpress?

The Thesis Theme for Wordpress is a theme available for use with self-hosted Wordpress blogs and websites.

What makes Thesis Theme just a little different than traditional themes is its highly customizable, flexible framework. Over the past year, it has become the theme of choice for professional Wordpress developers, entrepreneurs, and even casual bloggers. According to its creator, Chris Pearson, the theme itself has generated over $640,000 in affiliate revenue alone (that's the money Thesis creators have paid out to affiliates).

Thesis is ready for use straight out of the box, but that's not the primary reason people buy it. Rather, because it's so flexible, it can be made to look and behave however you would want, making it a designer's dream theme.

HIGHLIGHTS (What makes Thesis Great):

  • Super lightweight theme. Doesn't slow down your blog/site.
  • Easy to install using the one-click Theme installer built right into Wordpress (no necessary fussing with FTP, except for people who use the custom folder).
  • Free upgrades (which, thankfully, are not very often).
  • Ability to completely customize navigation with no additional plugins. You have complete control over your pages and categories.
  • Quick, responsive support forum - whenever you get stuck (IF you get stuck).
  • Many examples and tutorials out there, since everyone and their mom is using Thesis these days.
  • Lucrative affiliate program, if you want to recommend it to friends.

SURPRISES (Things that make you go hmm):

  • Don't expect to activate it and have one of the super designs you see in the links below. You will need to customize it.

That's pretty much it. I've found that most people are incredibly happy with Thesis and the ones that aren't are unhappy because they didn't realize that in order to make it super, super snazzy, there is some customization required.

Hiring a Thesis Theme Designer

As stated earlier, the Thesis Theme for Wordpress is ready to go straight out of the box, but many bloggers choose to customize it, either themselves, or with the help of a professional Thesis Theme Designer.

Important Things to Note:

  • Thesis has a look and feel that's preconfigured. In order to get the look of the great designs in the Thesis Galleries below, you'll have to customize it.
  • You can customize many things with no coding skills whatsoever, but some things require custom code. When you buy Thesis, you're given access to a great support forum (which I've used many times) and the people there will help you out with custom solutions.

What to look for in a Thesis Theme Designer:

  • Experience with Thesis Theme for Wordpress (ask to see 2-3 varying designs/customizations)
  • Experience with Wordpress (aim for at least 2 years)
  • Reasonable rates (you may be able to find a designer who will charge a flat rate for a custom design)

So what can you do with Thesis Theme for Wordpress? Tons. Check out these great links before for hundreds of out of this world blog designs - all created from a single theme - Thesis.

Where to Buy Thesis

You can purchase Thesis Theme from DIY Themes. They also have a great affiliate program, if you are so inclined.

Money Back Guarantee

If you find it too difficult or just don't like it, you have 30 days to get your money back. This is recent. I don't know of any other Wordpress premium themes that offer that (some may, I just don't know of any).

I use Thesis. I've been running it on my busiest site for a few years. I don't know why anyone would hire a designer to work with Thesis, unless you really don't want to take the time to DIY. It's simple, just follow along with the notes in the theme. I do try other themes, free and premium. I always end up back with Thesis. It's pretty simple to work with, gives me great features and I like the feel of the people who work on the project. They actually will answer your questions and care about what people think and want added to upcoming versions.

Thesis is one of the top WP themes, I use it on several of my blogs and as you said it's fully customizable. On some of those blogs you couldn't even recognize the basic layout, I love it and recommend it to everyone I know :)

Thesis is more ubiquitous than AIR. =) I've enjoyed the dozens of samples I've seen - do you use them as a primary design platform?

This is JamestheJust on Elance, or Just James InIdaho, or The Average Genius, btw.

AND: have you any experience with the Socrates theme? It's Joel Comm's theme - I've no idea which is better, but Socrates seems easier than Thesis (which I hear has a steeper learning curve?).

I could be wrong on that - but have you tried both?
