Xperia Play Cell Phone - Playstation Phone Release Date, Price, Features and Specifications

Updated on July 8, 2011

It seems that day after day there is a new announcment for a new kind of cell phone, or there's a press conference announcing a new line of phones, are theres an update making phones faster, new apps, new... well, you get the idea. It's hard to keep up with the stream which technology resides in: the path becomes narrower, the water moves faster.

One of the more new cell phones to be announced, at least offically that is, is the android powered cell phone the Xperia Play. The Xperia play mobile phone was orignnaly known just as the 'PlayStation' Phone, the first Sony android phone to grace the market. The rumors swirled instantly - what kind of phone will Xperia Play be? Will is a be the first android gaming cell phone? Will it be one of the best android phones 2011?

We didn't know then - but we know now. With the official commercial announcement for the Xperia Play during the SuperBowl the information on the infamous PlayStaion phone has come pouring in: Xperia specs, Xperia features, Xperia Play release date, and even an Xperia price guide.

Ready to take a look at, well, you could call it, if you wanted, an Xperia Play review:

Xperia Play Super Bowl Commercial

The Xperia Play mobile android phone made it's official announcement to the cell phone world with a commercial during the Super Bowl.  Now you're probably wondering - what does a commercial have to do with anything like the Xperia Play's specifications and features?

Well - let me tell you - I wouldn't have thought that it would.  Then I saw the, well, very creepy commercial about the Sony android phone and that thought changed.  Whenever you want to have a commerical during the Super Bowl - the, and I mean the, most desired advertising space in the world - you need to have something that will stick and capture the attention it deserves.

So what did the Xperia Play Sony Android cell phone capture?  Other than being a very weird commercial (just watch it for yourself) is said one, rather bold, statement:  we're changing the way you look at android phones.

This, then, in the end, may be a good thing.  Take a look and decide for yourself.

You wouldn't know by looking at it, but the Xperia Play looks even better under the hood.

Xperia Play Sony Ericsson Phone Specifications

You came here for probably one reason (at least one main reason) and that was to find out how the Xperia Play PlayStation phone is going to stand up against other Android phone giants. You're wondering, 'Will the Xperia phone has the specs and features to match other phones?'

The answer this that question, and many others, is a resounding yes. The first Sony Ericsson android phone, well, it came to play with the big guys.

Let's first talk about the Xperia Play screen, one of the biggest, and clearest, of any smartphone on the market. It's a 4inch LCD screen that has a resolution of 854 x 489, which, let me tell you, is a very, very high quality picture. With 512 MB of Ram, and micro SD slot, the Xperia play cell phone is right up there is the specs department with many Google phones. Awesome.

And it get's better - those were just the generic specifications for the PlayStation phone. The camera is a 5 (5!) mega pixel device that can, you guessed it, record HD videos. With a noise cancelling microphone - one the new cool technologies out there - and a big battery life, the Xperia play looks ready to be, well, one of the best phones of 2011.

Xperia Play Features

Alright, let's face facts - the Xperia Play PlayStation mobile phone has good specifications.  But, even if a car has one of the best engines around, if it doesn't have all the other features, then what's the point.  Like a cake without icing it's just not worth it.

So what about the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play features?  Do they ice the cake?  Do they make the car complete? (Don't worry I'm done with analogies).

The first big features, and probably the biggest selling point of the Xperia Play, is the gaming aspect of the cell phone.  The cell phone is, without a doubt, the first android phone to be specifically designed for gamers.  Gaming on the Xperia Play is directed towards the casual gamer - which isn't a bad thing - meaning most of the games will be casual arcade type games, racing games, and, I'm sure, a few FPS games.  Of all the features the Xperia Play possess, the gaming aspect is it's best.

The next question - how do you play games on the Xperia Play?  The Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone is designed like many other Android phones, using a slide interface.  Slide the phone apart to reveal a gaming controller (it looks like a classic super Nintendo controller), while the touch screen remains above.  Little is known if the touch interface, as well as the controller, will be combined together in some games.

As for other features on the Xperia Play, well, many of them will be similar to other Android phones.  Expect a lot of social media applications (PlayStation wants to forge a bridge between a gaming and social networking), as well a direct link to the Google Marketplace.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Release Date

Now for the biggest thing of, the biggest question: when will the Xperia Play be released?

The answer, unfortunately, isn't as easy as you would hope. The official unveil of the Xperia Play, as well as the Xperia price and other additional deals (like 3G and 4G) will occur on February 13th, 2011 at 18:00 - I know, talk about hype.

If I had to guess, though, one when the Xperia Play would be released I would say it will happen in the June and July months.

As for the Xperia Play price: expect it to be around 300 dollars (unless you get a plan, then there will be deals).
