AI Could Kill Creativity

The Rise of AI

AI is being used in many places, offering people more ways to be creative, but what will that do to original works?

Should Creativity Using AI Be Treated The Same As Original Thought?

This morning, I wanted to take a few minutes and talk about something that has been really bugging me lately. The whole AI movement is great, there are so many things about it that will be beneficial to humanity, especially in the health and science fields. However, there's an aspect of AI that's really bothering me, and I don't know if I'm the only one or if anyone else feels the same. I figured I'd put the ideas out into the universe and see if I get a bite. So, if this does interest you, please comment below after you read this! I would love to hear your take on things.

AI has the capability to do so many things now: it could replace a lot of jobs, it's efficient, and it will give humanity more time to focus on other things that need to be addressed. The one thing I DON'T like about AI? That some are using it for creativity. There's a difference, in my book, between using software and art programs and other things to create something: you still made that, AI did not. That is YOUR work of art. When you add AI into the mix, this complicates things, and there are plenty of people out there who I am sure will take advantage of that in the future.

Now, people can write songs, poetry, create art, and instantly create many things without having to think or do any work. In my opinion, it completely takes away the beauty of creativity. Creativity is a human concept that is built from intelligence and hard work and passion and I think that's what makes it beautiful. Not everyone is good at art, or music, and that's okay! We don't all have to be good at everything, but it always seems like society is pushing that narrative to people anyway. I've never been fooled by it: more curious than anything else. ("Curiouser, and curiouser" like Alice!)

Like I said, not everyone is creative or creative in the same ways; that's what makes the human experience on this planet so unique. Having artificial intelligence help you write something will not only take away from creativity and passion, it will also take away valuable educational skills that kids need in order to function in the real world.

Why This Could Be Bad In Schools

Kids should be able to write and create things without having to use AI. As we all know from the many science fiction books and movies of decades past, there is a such thing as relying too much on AI, and relying too much on technology, which can end up having catastrophic consequences if humanity isn't careful. Relying on those things, I think, also impacts our basic biological processes, too. People have become so immune to certain things. (For instance, I wonder how much of our "fight or flight" mode has been impacted by social media, for instance. I bet it's not nearly as strong as in earlier humans because of our reliance on technology to solve problems---we need to know how to do both.)

There are so many things in this world right now that are just...very different from what I thought they would be. It's kind of scary, but also kind of exciting. My hope is that people will still create, on their own, without the help of technology. My art, my words, my music, my poetry might not be perfect, but that's kind of what makes it great, doesn't it? Accepting humanity's beautiful flaws and still loving the things that humanity is capable of, even it it's not perfect, is part of the grander experience of life! I don't think we should deny ourselves those experiences because they are...human experiences.

Now, that doesn't mean I am anti-AI or anti-technology. One of the things we need to accept IS that tech is advancing, and very quickly now at that. There are reasons to be scared and hesitant of that, and there are reasons to be excited about that. I think we have to know how to use it properly, but there are always going to be people using things with bad intentions. We can't make everyone use things the way they were intended, but we can teach future generations how to use technology the right way.

Technology education should be at the forefront of our education system now. When I was in school back in the 90s and 2000s, technology classes were electives, meaning they weren't required. That's just simply not realistic anymore to our ever-advancing society. I think that Technology should be a core class, just like English, Math, Science, and History. Kids are going to need to know this stuff. How are people going to learn how to use all this stuff, and do so effectively? We have to teach, and we have to teach children about the things that really matter about humanity, and not dwell on the things that hold us back. (This is also advice I need to give myself---which why I think I'm like Alice in Wonderland sometimes). Anyway, refocusing on the AI thing, I really hope AI doesn't kill creativity.

Imagine if Shakespeare had just been a computer that wrote all those stories. How sad would that be? One of the greatest writers of our time was actually just an AI program, an artificial creation, and not the creation of a human. Man-made, to me, is still very important, very valuable, and very useful. If humanity is smart, we will take those warnings from the sci fi stories of the past seriously. I hope we remember that and don't lose our heads in this matrix of a world that 2025 is!
