Best Cheap Gaming Laptops Under $500 (June 2013)

Updated on August 19, 2013

If you are on a very tight budget, but still want to play some games on a laptop, then see this list of best gaming laptops under $500. When you buy a sub-$500 notebook, don't expect high graphics settings in newer games. For serious gaming, you need something better than a cheap laptop with a AMD APU or something with no dedicated graphics card. If you want play games like Battlefield 3, Metro 2033 or TES: Skyrim, then I suggest you to spend around $100 more on a notebook with an intel Core i3/i5 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M / AMD Radeon HD 7670M class video card. Sometimes laptops like this are even cheaper, few dozen dollars over $500.

Best gaming laptop for under $500

ASUS K55N-DB81 is currently the best gaming laptop for under $500, even though it is available for just $399. This ASUS notebook is a great computer for its cost, it has a decent AMD A8-4500M APU with an AMD Radeon HD 7640G video card, Windows 8 and pretty good battery life (up to 5.5 hours). It also has 1 year Accidental Damage Protection.

ASUS K55N-DB81 15.6-Inch Laptop

Amazon.com

AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M 1.9GHz, 2.8GHz w/Turbo CORE

6GB of DDR3 SDRAM memory installed

750GB (5400rpm) Serial ATA hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics

15.6" HD LED-backlit Widescreen display (1366 x 768)

Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit operating system

Best gaming laptop for under $400

This Toshiba is an OK choice for around $350, it's much better than sub-$400 laptops that have AMD E-Series APU or Intel Pentium processor. AMD A6-4400M and its integrated Radeon HD 7520G graphics have similar performance to older Radeon HD 6620G in games, but the processor part of the newer A6 APU isn't as fast (it's a dual-core).

AMD Dual-Core A6-4400M 2.7GHz, 3.2GHz w/Turbo CORE

4GB of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM memory

500GB (5400RPM) hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 7520G Graphics

15.6" TruBrite LED-backlit display (1366 x 768)

Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit) operating system

"Gaming laptops" under $400 (not recommended)

Following laptops are much weaker than notebooks that cost few dozen dollars more. Don't expect playing any recent demanding games fluently, even with lowest settings (at least with native resolution). Not so power hungry games like World of Warcraft and Sims 3 should be playable at low-medium settings on these low-end laptops.

Laptops with Intel Pentium B980 / B970 / B960

Notebooks with Intel Pentium B9X0 processor are not suitable for people who want to play modern games, especially when much more capable laptops only cost few dozen dollars more. This Lenovo is not a gaming machine, it just has average overall specs, but its Intel Pentium B960 is much faster than AMD Brazos E-450 or AMD E1-1200/ E2-1800.

Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop

(Matte Black)

Amazon.com

2.2GHz Intel Pentium B960 dual-core CPU

4GB of DDR3 system memory installed

320GB (5400RPM) Serial ATA hard drive

Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge)

15.6" HD LED (1366 x 768) display

Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit operating system

Laptops with AMD E2-1800

The AMD Dual-Core E2-1800 in this Toshiba is not a powerful processor, it's even slower than most much older AMD Turion and Intel Pentium Dual Core CPUs. Although it's faster than most Intel Atoms, it is still not a recommended buy for its price. The integrated AMD Radeon HD 7340 should be comparable to Sandy Bridge Intel HD Graphics.

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320

(Satin Black Trax)

Amazon.com

1.7GHz AMD Dual-Core E2-1800

4GB of installed DDR3 RAM

500GB (5400RPM) hard drive

AMD Radeon HD 7340 graphics

15.6-inch display (1366 x 768)

Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit operating system

I need really good graphics so I need at least medium setting graphics.

Extras (DO NOT HAVE TO GET BUT WILL BE AWESOME IF IT DID)

      Cool "Shell, case".

      Keypad will be nice.

      Full arrow keys.

What's a good laptop that runs games like TF2, Garry's mod, amnesia, portal 2 and combat arms well?

      $400 budget, i don't mind adding another $50 though. ($450)

      I found some good ones: K55N BA8094c (k55n ds81 with Windows 7) or ASUS V3-551-8469?

Can they run most of the games listed by at least a stable 30FPS+?

      Thanks.

Hi I am looking for a new laptop that will run WOW with out the frames and shuddering. My budget is not that big so I was hoping you could point me toward a few in the $500 range. I am currently using a toshiba Satalite A305 Model PSAG0U-01800M that's about 5 to 6 years old. I had the hard drive and memory upgraded last year but that does not do anything for gaming. I could run WOW before the last expansion I'll be slowly but now it does not even want to log in. I need something that can accommodate school, work and gaming. Any suggestions?

@duskkid: Well... AMD Radeon 7640G in Acer is not that big upgrade over HD 6480G, that you currently have. Maybe you can solve the shutting down problem and make the games run better. Your laptop probably needs cleaning from dust and maybe right drivers.

Or you could save up for Acer Aspire V3-571G-6407.

Hi and Happy New Year! :)

Im trying to replace my old xps 1530 dell. been awhile I know lol.

At the time I used it for some high end gaming but now I just play low end games like the sims 3 (with all expansion packs). The problem is that the game is running painfully slow (load times 5 mins and very jerky gameplay with slow rendering) on med-settings.

Dell sales recommended a Inspirion 15r Special Edition for 799 or 899 . seems a bit much for a better system to kill the load times / lag for Sims 3. Any advice would be great! Thanks for taking the time!

@rajgadhia12: The cheapest gaming laptop with a Full HD screen is currently Dell Inspiron Special Edition i15Rse-1667ALU, it costs under $800. If it's too expensive, then get Acer Aspire V3-771G-6851 for ~$680, it has a lower resolution screen (although it's larger) and about same gaming performance. Both computers have dual-core Intel Core i5 processors, gaming laptops with a Full HD display and quad-core processor cost even more.

PS. Some people with Windows 8 computers have issues with Minecraft.

@Unavailable LM: I would rather a full hd screen with a very fast processor........ I don't know what kind of processors would be fast....but I want the best I can afford with a low overall price on the computer...... I'm mainly asking you to tell me a nice computer that runs fast with those games , has a nice graphics card like an Nvidia or something, can run those games on high settings, and I guess can be the size of a dell or toshiba. @devin-wayman1: Acer Aspire V3-571G-6407 would run it best. The Acer will be much better than your current computer, unless you currently get 20FPS with maximum settings at 5760 x 1080 resolution :)

Which one of these computers will best run Team Fortress 2? I normally get 20fps on my other computer, but will any of these get any higher?

@Unavailable LM: Samsung Series 5 NP500P4C-S01US is a pretty powerful laptop that has Windows 7, it's very cheap too at the moment.

@Creeperd: Minecraft is currently having problems with Windows 8, it's difficult for me to recommend a newer Windows 8 laptop that might have issues with Minecraft. I don't want to recommend an outdated Windows 7 laptop just for Minecraft either...

@barrett-renshaw-50: Sorry, but it's pretty bad and definitely not worth the money... You can get a much better laptop with a AMD A8 or A6 APU for the same price.

@killerwire: Acer Aspire V3-551-8469 should run both, but I recommend something with a dedicated graphics card for better experience.

@ILIKEMINECRAFT8P: As far as I know AMD A8-4500M isn't overclockable. Check this site out to see what games HD 7640G can run:

@Sandman4219: Most likely not. You will need a ~$700 laptop with a GeForce GT 640M / Radeon HD 7730M or faster graphics card.

@Winepixels: The Acer has the power to run the game, but Minecraft currently has issues with Windows 8. Many people with new Windows 8 computers can't get Minecraft to work. However there are tweaks and fixes to solve it.
