Best Ipod Travel Speakers

Updated on July 2, 2014

Best Ipod Travel Speakers

I recently bought some travel speakers for my ipod to take on vacation. I wanted to be able to listen to music in my hotel room without having to take big speakers with me. So I did some research for the best travel speakers and this article details what I found. I was quite surprised at the wide range of speakers available for different budgets and requirements. Some are so tiny and portable but still pack a punch of sound.

When looking for the best travel ipod speakers for you needs consider the following?

Docking Station - do you just require speakers just to play audio or do you need a docking station to dock and charge your ipod?

Bluetooth - the newer generation of ipods have bluetooth and if your ipod has bluetooth there are some fantastic bluetooth speakers which will play your music from your ipod wirelessly. If you do have an older ipod without bluetooth, fear not, there are still lots of travel speakers featured in this article which can easily connect to your device.

Sound quality - Many of the speakers featured in the article are small but when considering their size do deliver powerful sound. There are some competitively priced small speakers which sound good but if you're looking for exceptional sound it may be worth paying a bit more and getting slightly larger speakers.

Portability - There are some very small ipod travel speakers available which will easily fit in your pocket or bag. Do you need them to be this small or would you prefer something a bit bigger? Do you require a travel case to protect them?

Battery life - There are 3 ways travel speakers can be powered, through an AC power connection, through charging an internal battery or by using AA / AAA batteries. This article features speakers which can be powered all three ways. Before purchasing, think about how long you will need the battery life to last before recharging or getting new batteries.

Price - the price you are willing to pay may vary according to how good you want the sound to be and the extra features you require.

Read on for suggestions of the best ipod travel speakers 2014.

X-Mini II Capsule Speaker - My Choice Of Speaker

This is the speaker I chose.

I've just taken it on vacation with me to listen to music in my hotel room and it was perfect for me needs. Here is why:

Portability - this little speaker is so lightweight and portable. I literally just tucked it into a corner of my suitcase. It hardly took up any room. The wire which attaches to your ipod is small so won't get tangled up and you can wrap it around the base. You compress it to make it smaller and it opens up slightly when you want to use it.

Sound - the sound is perfect for listening to music without disturbing others. It's not the best sound but it is surprisingly loud especially when you consider it's size. If you are looking for some amazing sound you probably want to pay a bit more but for personal use or for listening to music with a group of friends in one room, it's perfect. I also use it with a laptop so we can watch videos with louder sound.

Price - It's extremely good value at approximately $13.

Battery life the internal battery life is approximately 11 hours so you don't need to keep charging it which is real plus for me and the main reason why I chose it. A lot of other smaller speakers don't have battery lifes that last so long.

Other points - You can connect this speaker together with others to create a louder sound if you wish too as well.

You can collapse the speaker to make it even smaller and expand it when in use.

Similar Portable Capsule Speakers

There are a range of similar speakers to the Xcube above.

They all vary slightly on battery life, price and sound quality. I have tried to round up the stats on each one to give you some comparisons.

One of the reasons I chose the speakers above was due to the long battery life (which is 11 hours). Other speakers don't have that long in battery life so this may be something to consider.

Tips for Choosing the Right Travel Speakers

Once you've decided the qualities you want for your ipod travel speaker, here are some more tips for choosing the best device for you:

Reviews - Read reviews from others on the travel speakers. They can give you a good sense of what the sound is like and the good and bad features. Quite often there are video reviews which you can find on youtube or check out amazon for lots of reviews.

Bestseller lists - When I'm buying something I always check out what is selling well as this gives you a good idea of the speakers which will be the best value for money and have good features. I'ts always worth checking out bestselling list on amazon.

Bluetooth speakers

If you have bluetooth on your ipod, there are some bluetooth speakers which deliver excellent sound. There are bluetooth speakers to suit all budgets. Generally, the more expensive the speaker the better the sound should be.

When choosing a bluetooth speaker its worth considering all the factors I've already mentioned such as battery life, price, size and sound quality. However, you may also want to factor in the range of the speaker. Some speakers like the bose speaker below have a range of 30 feet!
