A dual-layer DVD is a DVD with two physical layers for recording and playback. This means that instead of the usual 4.7 GB of data a regular DVD can hold, a dual-layer disc is able to hold almost double that data. Blank dual-layer DVDs and dual-layer DVD players are still more expensive than their single-layer counterparts, however. Additionally, there is a slight pause in the DVD player as it switches from one layer to another. Apparently this can be up to a few seconds.
