It sounds like you have household bleach in your hands, and it drys the skin even if used in diluted amounts. It reacts with some metals, and should not be mixed with other cleaners in the same bucket, as that is very dangerous, and may create lethal fumes.

msds.com is a site that you can register with, and get each specific company's MSDS on each chemical product they release. For instance, Sodium Chloride, table salt, has more than 250 entries and many companies produce and sell it.
