Run a very hot wash with about two cups of vinegar. Next clean inside & round the rim of the door with bicarbonate of soda. Also remove the section where you put your detergent & fabric softener into & give that a good clean as well. Run another hot wash cycle & it should be done!
Smelly washer smell (musty) is the most common complaint about front loading washers. The advice given by keepitnatural is good. In addition to that advice, it it also advisable to try to dry the door boot after each wash, leave the door open. Place a dry towel in the door opening. All these strategies are recommended by one manufacturer or another. In addition, they recommend a bleach wash at least once a month.
First you have to clean the washer thoroughly. All signs of mold and stale water have to be eliminated. You can use bleach or dedicated washer cleaner detergent. The rubber gasket at the front door will have visible signs of mold first. Check if you have signs of mold, and clean them. Also, clean the pump filter area. After the washer is clean, you can use the hot water cycle and other detergents to get rid of mold and smell for good. Remember to keep the front door open between washes.
