What steps should I take to secure and optimize my brand new computer with Windows 7?
When you get a new computer with Windows 7 what can you do to make it more secure and add to its speed and usability. What programs should be installed i.e. Antivirus, 3rd Party Firewall. Media Management etc.
I would definitely install an antivirus software such as AVG or Avast. Also, install MalwareBytes and Spybot just in case you need it when spyware strikes. If you access the Internet via a wireless router, change the settings so it's not using any default passwords.
Backup is another thing. Dropbox offers free backup up to a certain amount of storage. It's great because you can access your files from any computer with internet. Carbonite offers much more storage, but is strictly backup (cannot access files anywhere else). Good for media (pictures, videos, music).
Somethings I have done to secure my Windows 7 laptop include; purchasing and installing McAfee security Plus, downloading and installing Avast Security, ensure windows firewall is on, and windows defender is on. I have also encrypted my hard rive to government encryption standard using a free encryption program Truecrypt.
