Is there any way to prolong the life of batteries?

From the site, The battery university, I learned that batteries start losing their potency as soon as they leave the factory. This is depressing. Is there any way to reverse the process?

Someone once told me they last longer if you refrigerate them when you buy them. Anyone know if there's any truth in this?

Yes, I heard that putting them in the fridge works. I know for laptop batteries and cellphone battieries, it is always good to recalibrate them. Basically, once every month you should use your device until the battery energy is down to zero then charge it full again. Completing the full cycle is good for the battery's lifespan.
