My Nikon Cool Pix P510

Updated on November 11, 2014

The Nikon Cool Pix P510

Calling all Photographic enthusiasts! If you are a photographer and specifically an outdoor photographer I think it will be to your advantage to find out more about this little gem I have purchased.

With this Hub my goal will be to tell you more about my experience with the Nikon Cool Pix P510 and what I found out about some bad reviews. You should understand why I say that the P510 Nikon is good value for money.

Purchasing my Nikon COOL PIX P510

After purchasing the Nikon P510 my wait for my Nikon Cool Pix P510 was not that long.

I ordered it one day and it arrived at my place the day after. It was exactly as described and it was packed properly.

The red colour was also extremely nice on my eye. Very eager to start shooting with my brand new camera I opened the handbook, ( I downloaded it from Nikon's Site and printed it) to try to make some sense of all the gadgets on this little gem. I am not today's child any more and the new electronic stuff is a bit foreign to me.

Learning my Nikon P510 Coolpix

Although I am today's technology disabled it did not stop me working through the reference handbook, which is more than 260 pages long, because I planned to take photo shots with all the features that the P510 Nikon offers and not only point and shoot images.

For that reason it is advised that every one that buys this gem to read through the handbook and makes yourself familiar with all the functions, features and gadgets of this camera. Once you understand all the features, gadgets and functions the Nikon P510 Coolpix is quite easy to operate, even for an old timer like me.

Nikon Coolpix P510 16.1MP Critcisms

I have read some reviews on forums and find some bad write ups which made me concentrate on them. Most criticisms were about:

1 Focussing problems
2 Stability at the zoom's far ranges
3 Short battery life
4 Not easy to download shots
5 Sound during playback while panning during motion picture photography

I would like to go over the criticisms one by one.

P510 Nikon Focussing problems

While taking shots of small birds in our back yard using the great 42x Optical zoom at full range I was able to get quite clear shots of the bird feeder, but to get decent shots of the smaller birds I had to focus my Nikon Cool Pix P510 else where which solved the auto focus problem.

It is still a little bit irritating not to be able to focus directly on the small objects that you want to capture but with some experience this is not too much of a hassle.

Nikon P510 stability at the zoom's far ranges

By using a tripod I was able to take clear shots of the bird feeder and the small birds and there was no instability.

In fact there was no stability problems using the Nikon P510, but however to get the auto focus to home in on a small bird I had to focus on something else for it to work.

Nikon P510 COOLPIX Short battery life

Sadly I must agree with the criticism about the short battery life of the P510 Nikon . The original battery with the lower storage capacity lasted a few days but died on me without giving any notice - but batteries now a days are not made the same as in the older days (made to be replaced is today's motto). To get back to the battery not lasting I purchased an aftermarket battery with a higher storage capacity as replacement and it didn't last that long either.

Using the EVF, editing features and auto focus without taking a lot of shots drains your battery very quickly even if you have it on power save. I think I have charged the new larger battery to little causing it get drained quickly. By the way after reading the new batteries instructions I realized that because it is larger it must charge longer to give maximum working time ( not very clever of me not doing it first time around).

But to sort out your battery problems you can follow what most owners do and buy yourself a 2Pack Battery And Charger Kit For Nikon P100 P500 P510 P520 Digital Camera, which Includes 2 Extended (1100 Mah) Replacement Nikon EN-EL5 Batteries, an AC/DC Rapid Charger, LCD Screen Protectors and a Butterfly Photo Micro Fibre Cleaning Cloth

Nikon Cool Pix P510 not easy to download shots

Although you get a UC-E6 USB Cable in the box with your camera, using the Nikon Cool Pix P510's download software supplied with the camera is slow and cumbersome to download photos.

I found using a SCHC memory card reader can also read and download photos to your hard drive making the use of the supplied camera cable unnecessary and the download process that much easier.

The Nikon P510 sound during playback while panning during motion picture photography

I took videos of the same birds in our backyard panning in and out without hearing any sounds during play back which can only be attributed to the fact that the manufacturer has taken note of the earlier reviews and corrected the problem or may be I am losing some of my hearing ability.

Coolpix P510 Nikon More cool features

But there is more to the Nikon Cool Pix P510 than the criticisms answered above. I found the features discussed below very interesting and value for money.

The camera comes in red and black and in the box you get :

1) Nikon COOLPIX P510 Digital Camera (red or black)

2) EN-EL5 Lithium-Ion Battery (3.7v 1100mAh)

3) Replacement EH-69P AC Adapter Charger

4) AN-CP21 Strap

5) UC-E6 USB Cable

6) EG-CP16 Nikon Audio/Video Cable

7) LC-CP24 Lens Cap

8) NikonView NX 2 Software

Coolpix P510 Nikon sweep Panorama

The Nikon P510's sweep panorama is a technological development compared to the assist panorama (likewise a readily available option here) where the user needs to take up to 3 different shots at images while panning across 180 or 360 degrees and using a floating target to ensure the images are stitched together correctly by the camera's computer.

The net outcome was, that photo shopped or stitched together look, instead of the smooth look you receive from the sweep panorama function.

Nikon Coolpix P510 16.1MP's GPS

The Nikon P510 Coolpix in-camera GPS function is only good when you're outdoors and able to obtain GPS signals ( I guess you will not need a GPS when you are indoors). To make a GPS log, the camera's reference manual tells you to download it from their website utilizing a card reader and a memory card every other week.

Click on the My Computer link before you place the card reader so you can identify which removable drive is the card reader on your computer system. If you download it to your desktop, just transfer the file to the removable drive on your computer system where the memory card is located.

Find the NCFL folder on the removable drive and drag the downloaded file to it. Place the memory card back into your camera and your video camera will upgrade the A-GPS file in about two minutes.

P510 Nikon More Of This And That And Other Gadgets

Two years earlier, I thought we had seen the last of the Electronic View Finder (EVF), but Nikon has actually brought it back. For those that like a monitor for composing shots, it is adjustable for those difficult to reach shots at shows or concerts.

I would have preferred a time-lapse photography function, but given the numerous functions included here, I will not quibble. While I have no objective of retiring my tripod, I will not have to use it as much for wildlife, dawn and dusk's shots at my favorite National park.

I've never owned a Nikon previously; however after the Nikon Cool Pix P510 Camera, I will most definitely consider buying another one in the near future. I simply hope next year's model can deal with the auto focus issue experienced in the P510.
