Best Pinterest Image Size

Updated on October 9, 2012

What size is the best size for display on Pinterest?

Pinterest resizes all images to 600 pixels wide for their expanded zoomed in view. If your image is smaller than this, it will appear pixelated.Pinterest does not have a limit on an image's vertical height.

Another little known fact is that Pinterest descriptions also accept hyperlinks, but there is a 500 character limit.

Pinterest images display at 192 pixels wide in thumbnail view and 600 pixels wide in zoomed in view.

How Tall to Make Pinterest Optimized Images

Don't Make Images So Tall that Users Have to Scroll Up to Repin

There is no limit as to how tall you can make a Pinterest Image. However, you do want to be careful not to make your image SO TALL that a user will have to scroll back up to the top of the page to press the Repin button. If the average screen resolution is 1024 x 768 or even 1366 x 768 it's the 768 pixels that matters when we are talking about Pinterest image height.

When you consider the average number of pixels a user sees vertically is 768, it is safe to assume that a browser and its toolbars eat up a good 50 - 100 of those pixels when browsing on Pinterest. So all that's left for an ideal Pinterest optimized image is around 668 pixels for image height.

As I said earlier, you can make images as tall as you want (even 5000 pixels tall). However, when you do so - you risk loosing Repins by users that won't scroll back up to share your content.

Pinterest Image Height - Screen Resolution Matters

If the average screen resolution is now 1366 x 768, do you think the average Pinterest user has the same resolution, or a higher screen resolution?

What do you think the average screen resolution is for the average Pinterest user?
