Portability

I have an expensive 4K-capable projector in my dining room, which, when paired with a powerful speaker system, provides cinema-quality entertainment.

Today, however, I am closely examining a budget-priced device that prioritizes portability and ease of setup and use. While this type of projector is intended for use in a bedroom, it is small and light enough to carry along to a campsite.

Description

The MAGCUBIC HY300 Pro+ weighs slightly more than one pound and measures 4.7 inches in height, 3.7 inches in width, and 5 inches in length. The device is primarily constructed from white plastic with black and grey accents.

The central unit is similar in size and shape to a can of beans and is attached to a stand that includes a five-watt speaker and a mounting point suitable for ceiling installation. The projector supports WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

On the backplate, there are an air vent, a power button, a DC input, a USB-A input, and an HDMI port. The front houses an LED projection lamp that can be focused using the adjustment ring above.

According to the manufacturer, the projector features an 8000-lumen LED lamp with a contrast ratio of 8000:1, and its native resolution is 1280 x 720P.

The package contains the projector, an AC adapter, a Bluetooth remote, and a user manual. The device can stream video from several providers without the need for an external streaming stick.

Resolution

Native resolution refers to the projector's fixed horizontal and vertical pixel count. This device’s native resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels. The HY300 Pro+ can play 4K video, but it will be presented at the projector’s native resolution.

Brightness

Projector brightness is calculated in lumens. The HY300 Pro+ is bright enough to present an enjoyable image on a sunny day, provided all the lights are off and the windows are fitted with blackout curtains.

Keystone Correction and Focus

The keystone effect is the apparent distortion of an image that occurs when it is projected onto an angled surface.

If the HY300 Pro+ is pointed directly at its screen, the projector can automatically correct keystone distortion. This projector is also fitted with effective manual four-point keystone correction.

Focus can be easily adjusted using a dial mounted to the front of the projector.

Command and Control

This projector’s Android 11 operating system allows users to download and install a variety of streaming applications. These include Netflix, Prime, Disney Plus, and YouTube.

While applications for some of my favorites, like Apple TV and Tubi, are not yet available, I can stream them by connecting my ROKU stick to the projector’s HDMI port.

The system is controlled by the included Bluetooth remote.

Audio Quality

As the projectors I typically review are often equipped with tiny, ineffective speakers, I automatically connect them to an external sound system after completing my preliminary audio tests. The MAGCUBIC’s five-watt speaker is clear enough, but the volume level is low due to the competing sound from the projector’s cooling fan.

Taking advantage of Bluetooth, I paired the device to my 40W Tribit Stormbox Pro. This speaker delivers excellent sound without occupying a lot of space.

Setting Up the System

Although this projector is primarily designed for bedroom use, I positioned it on a small table in my dining room and directed it toward a 100-inch screen.

Instead of utilizing a standard AC outlet, I powered the device with an EBL 300W portable power station to evaluate its suitability for outdoor settings such as backyard gatherings or camping trips. With a power consumption of approximately 37 watts, the power station can operate the projector continuously for up to eight hours.

The integrated stand enables vertical adjustment of the projected image. After pressing the power button and viewing the startup screen, I made the necessary adjustments.

The configuration was completed via the projector’s on-screen menu, where I established a WiFi connection and paired the Bluetooth remote. Automatic keystone correction was then enabled to ensure proper screen alignment. Finally, I downloaded, installed, and verified access to both the Netflix and the Amazon Prime Video applications.

The Daytime Dining Room Test

I streamed a movie on Netflix but paused briefly to connect my Bluetooth speaker due to low volume. Additionally, since sunlight had washed out the screen, I closed the blackout curtain. Although some ambient light remained, the screen was bright enough for comfortable viewing.

The Evening Dining Room Test

That evening, with the blackout curtain closed and all lights off, I tried again. The screen image was very bright with plenty of color and good contrast. Some of this projector’s more expensive competitors boast slightly higher resolution, but my overall experience was good.

The HDMI and USB Outputs

I connected my ROKU streaming stick to the HDMI port. Unfortunately, the projector’s USB port did not provide sufficient power to drive the elderly, power-hungry streaming stick. I solved this problem by connecting the ROKU’s power input to my portable power station.

Using the ROKU stick, I was able to access a large variety of streaming applications.

The USB port is used to play movies stored on a thumb drive.

The Bedroom Test

I positioned the projector as directly as possible toward the opposite wall of the bedroom. Due to the projector’s slight angle relative to the wall, I utilized manual keystone correction to square the image and digitally reduced its size to fit within the available space.

The result was a 50-inch display that exhibited impressive brightness and vivid colors. The smaller screen size, compared to my previous dining room test, yielded a noticeable improvement in image detail.

Overall Impression

This projector is an excellent choice for bedroom use, offering a bright, colorful image at night and strong sound when paired with a Bluetooth speaker. It's built-in OS streams Disney, Netflix, and Prime Video without extra hardware. If you are looking for an affordable alternative to a bedroom TV, I recommend the MAGCUBIC HY300 Pro+ Mini Projector.
