Designing a Computer System

I plan to invest in one of those fancy minicomputers as a Christmas gift for myself. Since portability is a key reason to make this purchase, I also require a monitor and keyboard that are small enough to be easily carried and stored.

I chose a tiny but effective mechanical keyboard from Nimbleback and QQH’s top-of-the-line 4K portable monitor. Today, I am reviewing that 15.6-inch display

Description

The QQH Z12-4 weighs 1.5 pounds and is 14 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall, and 0.3 inches thick. It arrived in a well-designed, padded box that serves as a storage container when the device is not required.

This monitor's protective cover doubles as a stand. It features a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 3820 x 2160, and a pair of tiny speakers that provide stereo sound.

Two full-featured USB-C ports and a mini-HDMI port are located on the monitor's right edge. A 3.5mm auxiliary output accommodates a headset or external speakers. Push buttons control the device's OSC menu and volume.

The required cables, a soft case that can be converted into a stand, and a user guide are included.

Power Draw

The QQH Z12-4 requires a five-volt input. This may be supplied through either of the two USB-C ports located on the monitor's right edge.

The output from a connected smartphone can power this device, but the power draw of up to 15 watts will deplete the phone’s battery more quickly than usual. The better option is to also connect the USB-C power cable between the monitor's second USB-C port and an AC outlet. Laptops and other devices that utilize a USB-C port for power and data transmission may be connected in the same manner.

The device’s mini-HDMI port is used only for data; therefore, one of its USB-C ports must also be connected to a power source.

Device Compatibility

This monitor functions well with most cameras, Desktops, gaming consoles, laptops, and smartphones.

Resolution and Panel Type

The QQH Z12-4 portable monitor is fitted with an IPS panel. In-plane switching typically provides better viewing angles and color than other techniques.

This device boasts a maximum resolution of 3820 x 2160P and can display 16.7 million colors.

Screen Intensity and Color Gamut

The brightness of this monitor is rated at 400 nits. Its screen will reflect light in direct sunlight, but it will provide a bright and clear image under normal conditions.

The colors presented were sharp, vivid, and life-like when connected to my smartphone and laptop.

Positioning Horizontally and Vertically

The monitor case can be converted into a stand capable of holding the monitor vertically or horizontally. This stand provides good support.

The Laptop Test

Because I wanted to check the monitor’s power draw, I used the provided USB-C power cable and AC block to connect to my EBL portable power station.

During a series of tests, I used both the USB-C cable and the HDMI cable to receive data from my Lenovo ThinkPad T14 business laptop.

The monitor immediately detected the signal and replicated my laptop's screen. I opened Netflix and streamed a movie for a few minutes. Then, I retrieved a photograph I’d snapped while reviewing a projector, comparing the quality difference between my laptop’s display and the new monitor. While the laptop’s lower resolution of 1920 x 1080 might not have been a factor in this case, its display lacked the sharp and vivid colors of the new QQH monitor.

The computer also transferred audio to the QQH Z12-4. However, since portable monitor speakers are typically no better than those fitted to a laptop, I usually rely on a Bluetooth speaker to enhance the sound. If I had wanted, I could have used an audio cable to connect the monitor directly to a powered speaker.

In my final test, I used Windows 11 to experiment with multiple display settings. This procedure worked very well.

The Smartphone Test

I connected my Redmagic Android smartphone using the provided USB-C cable. If I had planned to keep these devices connected over a long period of time, I would have preserved my phone batteries by connecting the external monitor to a power source.

The QQH Z12-4 detected the new device and replicated its display. I selected the Prime Video application and streamed another movie.

Both video and audio were transferred correctly to the monitor, but while the picture was great, I again connected my Bluetooth speaker for better sound.

At this point, I pressed the menu button to access the monitor's OSC menu, experimenting with the different functions available.

Overall Impression

Every portable monitor I’ve reviewed in the past worked well as a second screen, allowing the user to view information from two different pages or sources simultaneously.

However, this new 4K monitor adds a new dimension, providing a brighter, more vivid, and more detailed image. The display of my workhorse laptop looked drab in comparison, and the tiny seven-inch screen of my high-end gaming smartphone was accurately reproduced by this 15.6-inch 4K monitor. If you are looking for an external monitor that is useful as either a second display or for viewing multimedia, I strongly recommend the QQH 15.6 Inch 4K UHD Portable Monitor.
