Toshiba REGZA 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

Updated on December 12, 2014

Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Is A Great TV At A Great Price

The Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with ClearScan 240, Black is an affordable LCD HDTV that looks good and has a good looking picture. If you are looking for a television that does most things pretty well at a good price point, you should be considering this one.

On this page, you will find general information about this television and not all of the technical specifications, sort of an overview, if you will. You will also find some great comments from professionals and from real people, like you and me. I always start my research by referring to two sources of information about electronic products, Sound & Vision magazine and Amazon Customer Reviews. One is an expert source and one an ordinary consumer sharing their own very real experiences. I hope you find this page useful and you find the HDTV that's right for you!

Home Theatre Review says, "The Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U HDTV is a well-endowed 1080p LCD with worthwhile features like ClearScan 240 and Dolby Volume, yet it still falls at the lower end of the price range compared with other 240Hz HDTVs." It is considered a somewhat basic model because it does not have all the features that manufacturers are cramming onto sets these days. However, the removal of some of those features, which you might or might not use, allows you to buy a larger set for less money.

If you do choose to purchase this television, you will receive a pedestal stand, remote control and batteries, cloth for cleaning the screen and printed operating instructions and you will really be able to enjoy your home movies. Wouldn't it make an amazing Christmas gift?

PROS of the Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U - Simply put, this Toshiba HDTV has:

  • Fantastic picture clarity and quality. Owners report amazing picture in HD and that DVDs upconverted to 1080P beautifully.
  • Favorable reviews from professionals and ordinary folk who buy this television.
  • Affordable, steeply discounted price at Amazon at almost $500 off the list price with the cost of delivery included!
  • Plenty of extra input choices.
  • A good looking profile. Toshiba edged their set in silver metal, which fades to black. Smart.
  • A nice remote control.
  • A light-weight size with shipping weight said to be 69 pounds.
  • Dolby volume which maintains loudness when switching channels and sources.
  • Volume control (called audio levelling) for increases and decreases in sound when commercials come on. (One of the most important features, in my humble opinion.)
  • ClearScan 240 a feature which reduces blur on high-speed objects.
  • The capability to automatically adjust for lighting conditions. I like this feature, too. When I turn my television on, I want to be able to just watch it.
  • An Energy Star rating, meaning it meets strict guidelines for energy use.

CONS of the Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U - The Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U has a couple of issues that I saw discussed:

  1. The first is perhaps the most important issue and it has to do with black levels in the picture being unequal to that of other sets of comparable value. That's an important issue, but perhaps a tradeoff that helps you get a larger television for the same price. It is also an issue that some people don't think they would even notice.
  2. Some people do not like the design of the bezel edge. That is simply, I think, a matter of personal taste.
  3. The remote control is not backlit. This, to me, is a small issue that you will no doubt grow accustomed to. I did read, however, that it is a friendly remote and the most important buttons are wisely positioned.

And Here's What Amazon and Best Buy Customers Are Saying About The Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U

"Of course the most important was the picture quality, and the image is stunningly clear.

Compare it side-by-side with mid-level Samsungs and Sonys, and you'll have to agree the picture is every bit their equal, and it costs hundreds less." ~~ Best Buy Customer Review

"Audio quality is good if you can be satisfied with 10 watts per channel, and the audio levelling feature actually works to prevent commercials from blasting (my wife is happy about that.)." ~~ Best Buy Customer Review

"This is the first TV I've ever had that looks good with the automatic controls left ON." ~~ Best Buy Customer Review

"No complaints on it. Plus my wife likes the TV, so that is a great bonus. I love the TV and highly recommend it." ~~ Ray, An Amazon Customer

"I'm not saying it is the best TV out there, but if you give it a fair look you may just take one home." ~~ Paul Manuel, Experienced Newbie, An Amazon Customer

"I have it for a month or so. It looks and works great. Installation was super easy, colors are fine right out of box to me. We watched several blu ray movies and picture is breathtaking. So far I am very happy with purchase." ~~ Oleg Shpak, Amazon Customer

Sound & Vision Magazine Sums Up The Merits Of The Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U LCD HDTV Nicely For Us:

"Toshiba's affordable 47ZV650U looks good, and it also delivers a very good-looking picture. The main thing that keeps me from fully singing its praises is black-level performance, which was only average for an LCD HDTV. But if you're in the market for a TV that does most things right, and does so at a reasonable price, the 47ZV650U should be high on your list of models to check out."
