TweetDeck - Twitter desktop client

Updated on September 27, 2014

A Twitter desktop client with multiple columns, follower grouping, Facebook integration and more

TweetDeck is a Twitter desktop client which you can download for free and it provides lots of great features and tools to help you manage your Twitter account and Twitter followers more efficiently. This Twitter client has some cool bonus features that helps you with other social media sites like Facebook as well. Is this the best Twitter client available in the market ? According to recent surveys, more than 70% of Twitter client users use TweetDeck. Also there are rumors that Twitter is having discussions with TweetDeck to buy the software, If that happens this will definitely be the client to use for Twitter. I have being using TweetDeck for more than two years now and I can safely say that it has helped me manage my Twitter account and Twitter followers more efficiently. There are many features available in this software that will help you manage your Twitter account, optimize your Twitter updates and track various trends on Twitter. Below are some of the cool features included in TweetDeck.

** Note - TweetDeck is owned by Twitter now, Although it is a good move the bad side is now they don't support other social networks

Features in TweetDeck

  • Support for Six social Networks

Update - After Twitter acquired TweetDeck this support is no longer available. Now it only supports Twitter accounts

TweetDeck now support six major social networks. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Buzz, MySpace and FourSquare. You can also support multiple Twitter accounts using the same window and the great things is you can update all these services at once as well. This is a great feature to have in your managing multiple accounts for various customers.

  • Multiple Columns

TweetDeck allows you easily get an overview of all your accounts using columns. You can have one column to track your mentions, one column to follow some Twitter list you created, one column for direct messages and one column for your Facebook friends status updates and many more. If you're working on increasing Twitter followers then this is one of the best tools to manage your Twitter accounts. You can customize the columns according to your needs and without a doubt one of the best ways to utilize your Twitter experience and track the tweets that are really important for you.

  • Synchronize across multiple computers

This is a great feature if your logging to the Internet via multiple computers. The usefulness of this feature has reduced a bit after Twitter introduced lists, but if you are accessing the Internet from multiple locations then this is a handy feature to have.

  • Integrated URL shortening via 6 services

You can specify which service you want to use for shortening links. Then its just a matter of pasting the link and it will be shortened for you. If you are using a service like bit.ly for tracking links you can do that as well after connecting your bit.ly account. This automation saves you a lot of time helps you make best use of your 140 character limit as well.

  • Support for Picture uploading

If you are frequently uploading pictures to Twitter the TweetDeck has support for that too. It supports five popular Twitter picture uploading sites which included TwitPic and YFrog. Its just a matter of selecting the picture from your computer, everything else will be done for you. How cool is that.

  • Optimize Your Twitter Messages

If your using Twitter for business and marketing purposes it is important to optimize your Twitter messages. TweetDeck has built in features like recent hash tags, Tweet Shrink ( automatically shorten your message using well know abbreviations ) that will help you make best use of the 140 character available to you.

  • Translation available in more than 20 languages

Want to tweet in your mother tongues , well TweetDeck has translation support for more than 20 languages.

  • Support for StockTwits

Interested in the stock market ?, get live updates from recommended traders or from your friends who are already using StockTwits

The features listed above are enough reason for you to give TweetDeck a try, especially since it is free. @BarbRad: It does consume resources, but any application that runs on Adobe Air does take some resources and as you said it can be very frustrating if you don't have a powerful computer. As for the noise, you can create separate tabs for different lists and follow the ones you really want and it has more options like easily adding hash tags, following trends etc which will come in handy

I like it, but I can't handle the constant noise it makes. Is there a way to turn off that chirping? Also, before I got a new and more powerful computer, Tweetdeck seemed to hog all the resources, slowing my computer almost to a stop sometimes. Other than that, it's wonderful. Meanwhile, Twitter itself has improved a lot, making it very easy now to follow a conversation thread.

There's a lot of web apps as good as tweetdeck, but when comes to standalone apps, there's no competition for it.
