3 Southern Cities for Your Bucket List
Southern Charm and History at its Best
There are many cities in the South that should be on your bucket list but these 3 are the top. I have visited them many times and going back to each of them is still a permanent part of my bucket list! If you can only visit 3 southern cities, head to SC and Georgia for these three, which are conveniently within a easy road trip of one another.
Charleston SC
Houses and history
Charleston is a beautiful city full of history. It also has fabulous Folly Beach, great shopping, fabulous food and marvelous architecture.
Be sure to check out The Gay Dolphin, a wonderfully kitschy souvenir shop that has been around for many years. And don't dare miss the City Market, where you can watch women make baskets from sawgrass in the traditional way they always have and find all sorts of great merchandise.
Just walking or driving around Charleston offers plenty of beauty for viewing, but to learn more, take a carriage ride. And don't miss one of the ghost tours! It's a great way to learn the history and culture.
There are many great seafood restaurants to choose from, such as Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. and A.W. Shuck's. Or try Sticky Fingers for great Carolina BBQ!
Whatever you do there, Charleston will still a piece of your heart.
Sultry Savannah, GA
Savannah is another city full of history and beauty. The historic district is fascinating. Nearby islands like Tybee provide beaches. There are marvelous restaurants, great bookstores, and a very pleasant nightlife.
Here, you should definitely take a ghost tour. Savannah is considered to be one of America's most haunted cities. Even if you don't believe, you will learn so much about the city and its culture. I recommend Candlelight Tours.
Savannah is easily walkable and that is probably the best way to explore, although there are many enjoyable tours.
As for eating, The 1790 House is wonderful for fine dining while The Pirate's House is a great place to take the kids. Be sure to take a tour while you are there.
If you are a fan of cemeteries, as I am, don't miss Colonial Cemetery and Bonaventure Cemetery. Bonaventure is a delight for any visitor.
Once you visit Savannah, you will never forget it. Part of you will always be waiting to go back again.
Marvelous Myrtle Beach, SC
First for Family fun
If your favorite kind of vacation is at the beach, Myrtle Beach is for you. There are miles of sandy beach, sparkling ocean, and opportunity for swimming and sand castles.
Myrtle Beach also has lots of opportunities for family fun, from amusement parks like Family Kingdom to attractions like Ripley's Aquarium.
For shopping, don't miss Barefoot Landing, full of charming shops where you can find a variety of treasures.
As for eating, I recommend any of the fine seafood restaurants in nearby Murrell's Inlet, or Captain Benjamin's in Myrtle Beach itself. Also, for hot dogs, burgers, and other fun family beachwear, check out the boardwalk
