These car games are fun for anyone, and some of these challenge your brain a bit too. Playing these games can provide entertainment in the car as you ride along waiting to arrive at your destination. You may even get to know your traveling companions better, enriching your vacation even more than you expected!
It’s pretty easy just to search for car games online, but this article will supply you with the details of not only these car games, but links for you to check out other car games as well.
This article will touch base on the following details:
- Who can play these games? Who are they tailor made for?
- Why play car games? What is the purpose of them anyway?
- Where you will be playing these games – may be a bit obvious!
- When you will be playing car games – may also seem a bit obvious!
- How do you play each game – what are the rules and objectives
- What else you may need to know in order to pull this off during your next vacation
Who can play these car games?
These games in particular are tailored to an advanced child or a middle-school aged child, since they do involve knowing the capital cities of the U.S.A. However, that’s not to say you can’t find great games for the children in your life. You can do a classic game of I-Spy or create a killer Bingo game ahead of time. There are also plenty of other types of games for the car, so look them up or follow the leads in the links found at the bottom of this article. HERE are some car games tailored for kids!
Why play car games on your Road Trip?
The purpose of the car games is to provide you with entertainment on an otherwise boring car trip with your friends or family (or just travel buddies). They will help take up time and give you something fun to do! HERE are some awesome car games to prevent boredom!

I found these free printables on Pinterest. I will introduce the full details of my travel binder/organizer in another article. For now, I am covering car games.
Please read the bottom of this article where there are more car games and suggested alternative solutions for bored; it has tips on how to make the ride go faster, how to create a vacation scrapbook, and more!

Where will you be playing these car games?
This may seem to be pretty obvious, but maybe not. When you think of car games, you probably think of playing them in the car, but it may not be that way. If you wish to play them via another transportation method, you can! On a plane? Just don’t talk too loud, or use a notepad or computer to relay with your travel companion what you wish to say.
This may allow for more than one person to play since no one has to pay attention to the road (except the pilot of course). The same holds true for a cruise! Most likely there are plenty of distractions on board, but if you need a rest from them all, consider one of these travel games!

Which games have you played before during a road trip?
When will you be playing these travel games?
- On a road trip in the car or when you ride on another form of transportation like on a plane
- When you are bored on your vacation (if that ever happens)
- When you are preparing to go on a vacation (if someone is packing your stuff and you are bored)
- When you need something to think about instead of the winding road that is making you car sick!

Car Game #1 - The State Capital Game
Equipment Needed:
- A map of the USA or a list of the states
- Another sheet of paper or a link to the proper YouTube video with the capitals
Length of Time to Play:
- Could take longer than an hour, especially if you get stumped a lot, but have fun!
How to Play:
The game is very easy to understand – challenge the driver or other passengers (including you) to name the 50 states (check out the lyrics to this song for an easy song for you to learn how to list out the 50 states whenever you need to. You can begin by listing the 50 states (learn to sing the song below). Next, start listing the state capitols when each of them is read aloud. Whoever answers with the correct capitol gets a point for this state. Continue playing until you have listed all 50 states.

Car Game #2 - Name that Movie
Equipment Needed:
- A list of these quotes or songs, and a list of the answers with a willing participant. An alternative is to create your own quotes, songs, or whatever you can read to the driver or other travelers to stay busy during the trip.
Length of Time to Play:
- Could take longer than an hour, depends on how much of a movie buff you are.
How to Play:
Read these quotes or songs and challenge others to name the movie that contained the song or quote. The list of quotes and songs included in THIS game (please feel free to make your own) is at the bottom of this article.
Keep in mind, I have no idea how much of a movie buff you are or are not, so I have selected a few classics, but feel free to tailor it for your audience.
Home Remedies/Medications to Treat Motion Sickness
Playing car games can cause motion sickness. If they do, you can just stop playing them obviously, but if you are already sea-sick, try these home remedies:
--Try fresh Ginger or Ginger Ale (or another lemon-lime soda)
--Snack on saltine crackers
--Look up and watch the road
--Get some cold air to blow on you (or roll down your window)
--Try Dramamine
--Don’t play the car games if you get too nauseous or try one of these home remedies for nausea.
Car Game #3 - The License Plate Game
Equipment Needed:
- A blank piece of paper
- A pen or pencil
- (optional) Something hard to write on
Length of Time to Play:
- This will take up the entire trip, whether it’s via car or motor-home. (I don’t think this game should be played on a boat or plane) You could play this on a cruise or something, but instead of looking for the 50 license plates, try to meet a person from each of the United States!
How to Play:
Check out the following link for concrete questions, answers, and solutions you may have about this old-time travel game. It’s like I-Spy except you are trying to “see” all of the 50 states of the United States of America on different license plates.

Equipment Needed:
- Paper with trivia/family feud questions
- Paper with trivia answers
- Paper and pen/pencil to keep track of winner/loser
Length of time needed to complete this game:
- Approximately an hour
How to Play:
Create the questions and answers ahead of time, so as to having them ready for the car ride. Ask the questions from the question page and see who answers first. Check out the links below for some questions and answers to get you started, but you may wish to “make it your own” and tailor make it for you and your traveling companions.
