Dirty Things People Do On The Airplane~

Welcome~Bienvenue~Mabuhay! | Source

Is it really ignorance or some people are simply disgusting? Okay, you’re a first timer. You’ve never flown in your life before but that is not an excuse not to have good manners and right conduct in public. No excuse for being inconsiderate, particularly onboard an aircraft, in tight quarters with several hundred strangers around you. It’s incredible what people can do. They can make one puke (pardon me) and spoil a good mood.

Picking your nose in public is an ugly sight!

And without remorse, people seriously do disgusting things inside the airplane.

Here's the Top Ten:

  1. Picking noseOh, how delightful it is to see a nice handsome cool guy on his trendy outfit only to catch him later having pleasure picking his nose like a 2 year old kid. Ah, that is just the most disgusting thing ever. I hope he didn’t slip or stick it under the seat or meal tray. Must have been an adventure for him but not cool. Not cool, at all!
  2. Clipping nails – I understand you accidentally flip your nail but if you must do, please get into the lavatory and cut your purplish rotten nails there specially if it is your toenails. Eww!
  3. Sticking gum on the meal tray – This is why Flight Attendants must wear gloves. Well, at least one of the filthiest reasons. Really, what’s with you and the habit of sticking gum anywhere you feel like?
  4. Digging earwax – I hear you said you had some irritations with your ears because of scuba diving in the great blue water of Honduras. But, I cannot dig much further as to why you have to do it on your seat with your eyes close and face like having an orgasm as you tickle and play with the cotton buds in and out of your ear. And, here I am just about to hand over your meal. Perfect timing! Would you like to have some French fries with that?
  5. Picking a scab or pimple – So, you’re bored and decided to check your face in that compact press powder mirror. The lack of sleep and dry air in the cabin makes your face dull. At the same time, the cluster of zits and plugged follicles on your chin are bothering you. You started popping them and satisfy yourself by letting pus run through. You dab it with Kleenex and put the contaminated tissue in the seat pocket in front of you. Nice. Good job! (read: sarcasm). And yes, I’ve seen this on board first hand with my two chinky eyes.
  6. Farting – Ah, it’s not unusual anymore that people belch out to their comfort in the aircraft. I guess, this is now part of the recycled air that we breathe at 38 thousand feet . *Sigh * This is no class even on first class. No surprise! But farting out loud down the aisle and act shocked as if you’re not the one? C’mon!
  7. Walking down the aisle to the lavatory barefoot – This is classic yet more of a personal choice. But, did you know what you are actually stepping in on the floor of the aircraft especially in the lavatory? No, you don’t want to know.
  8. Brushing hair to get rid of flakes – The scenario…mother brushing her child’s hair. I’d say, I can take that. But, the mommy brushing her hair down and shaking her head to get rid of the flakes? Ahm, no! That is nasty! To quickly groom yourself is probably acceptable but not the obvious juddering of your head to shake off flakes in the aircraft. Yuk!
  9. Changing dirty diaper on meal tray – Now, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. The pull-down tray in front of you or the pull up, if it’s on your armrest is intended for your meal. So, you could enjoy your in-flight meals and drinks. It is not and you should not for any reason use it as changing table for your baby’s dirty diaper. There is a place for that called lavatory and it is equipped with the change table and wipes for your convenience.
  10. Getting a hand job under a blanket – Yes, you read it right! The ickiest! Need I say more? Well, some people have personal habits that would make a monkey blush. How curious it is!

Seriously, I’m not kidding. Can we not be more mindful of the things that are conceivably not socially acceptable and basically just mind our manners?

I love my job, don’t get me wrong and anyone who’s flown with me could attest that I am very open minded and cheerful Flight Attendant. It’ll be silly of me to go bitching (again, pardon my French) about it and sap my energy. Sometimes, I’d take it in jest-a dirty one that is and quietly laugh it off with fellow flight attendants at the back galley. It’s kind of senseless but they are honestly annoying and disgusting.

So, grooming, hygiene and the customary mode of acting in public. What's your take?

My take? There is really nothing wrong with going about some of these grooming and hygienic business. If we can only be discreet in doing so. Problem is that discretion is only half a deal, maybe not even so. I’m very lenient but I believe there’s a time and place for everything. And, there are certainly some things that other people need not see you do.

I’d love to hear your views and experience on flying. I usually would love to hear good stories. This time though, I‘d like to know your hideous and ickiest in-flight tale. Please dare share in the comment box below. In exchange, I will send you some love from the sky. :)

Thank you...

delia-delia: You bet but these things are happening even on ground transportation (bus, train, etc). People really need to mind their (disgusting) manners specially on public. I was once in a fine restaurant and the woman across our table was picking her teeth in the open before she put on some lipstick. I wanted to stand up and give her my table napkin so she could cover her mouth. What a turn off for my hubby!

What can I say, part of the job! Just not the best part and they make me sick really! :(

Well, I'm pleased to see you here and thank you kindly for your feedback.

Nothing surprises me in this day and age! What you described is Etiquette from hell. I've not encountered too many of these annoying and disgusting manners on a flight...Kudos to you for putting up with this...sadly now a days one can't make a fuss on a flight and not disrupt the whole flight process for everyone.

dragonflycolor: Let me just re-iterate these events doesn't happen all the time; only in a few special yet uncommon flights. :) Thank you for reading and leaving some feedback. Yes, please keep that meal tray in an upright position when you're done with your meals. It is safer that way specially in turbulent times. :) Happy landing!

TimeTraveller2: True stories in here but they don't happen all the time. As well, I see this kind of people even in the subway. :) More often we have good, decent passengers even though it's their first time on board.

Thanks for stopping by. Appreciate it.

Hello Rolly! Great to see you here....welcome aboard! Thank you for sharing your own experience here with us. Unfortunately, not everyone is as decent as we are. For me, just part of the job. *smile* This doesn't happen all the time though and I swear we have lots of nice and classy passengers as well.

As per your question, each airline have their own compartments for that. However, there's only 3 possible location: first overhead cabin, mid-cabin or last overhead compartment. Lol! You have to find out! Take care now.

Hi Cristina... You have me near rolling in the isles with some of the things you have seen... and near gagging with others. I certainly do not envy you and the tasks you are called to do.

I had two occasions where I was ready to swear off flying for life. On an Air Canada flight, I removed a magazine from the seat back, and it opened to a marker which freaked me out. It was a used condom, I only closed the magazine and carried up front and asked the flight attendant to open the garbage bag. She was very professional for a moment then we both started laughing unbeknownst to the passengers. I was pleased to find plenty of soap in the washroom.

The other flight was a Trans Air flight heading north. A young lady sitting beside me had a few too many drinks before boarding. The meals were served, and while cutting the mystery meat it filled off the tray and landed on the floor of the cabin. The sad part was she bent over, stabbed it with her fork and proceeded to eat it.

My question is where do you keep the emergency parachute should we decide to depart early from a flight.

      Hugs and much love

Thank you Sue. Passengers normally don't see what we (FA's) see on board. So, sit down and relax, enjoy your flight. :)

Oh, this made me cringe and laugh all at the same time. On a red-eye from Seattle to DC, some parents near me changed their infant's dirty diaper on the lap tray and stuffed the used poopy diaper (all folded up on itself) in the back seat pocket. I was gagging the whole time. On another flight an older man was moving his carry-on baggage and the contents spilled everywhere in the aisle next to me, including his condoms. Several of us were really shocked. For some reason, the flight attendant who was helping him collect his belongings intentionally kicked the condoms under a seat rather than pick them up (which was even funnier). And I would just as soon implode before I use a restroom on a plane or train. Funny hub. Voted up and more. Cannot believe those photos!

That is pretty disgusting material, Cris. I don't envy you. I used to fly to Phoenix rather frequently from Philly. A couple boarded with a small child, and dad and the baby were next to me. The baby cried constantly, probably because of an earache, and dad had the baby on his right shoulder, right next to my ear. Well, you probably know how long that flight was, and I was seated halfway down the aisle. By the time we were allowed to get up to disembark, I was the first one at the door. I think I died and went straight to the heat that day.

Hi Joe! Hard to imagine, eh? Thank you for your kindness. Trust me, you'll have it in return a hundred times. I've encountered quite a lot of nasty passengers but since they are not really mean or rude to me personally, I let them do their own business unless it is something really foul and dangerous or will affect our safety and security on board. coffee & btrbell: The airplane is clean, fresh and disinfected but once the people started boarding, it becomes contaminated. I have quite a lot of photos, I'm sneaky. Lol! I wish I was able to take a picture of another couple actually doing it. No wonder, they asked to be moved to the very back seat. :) Most of these happens on a red-eye flight, when passengers are all sleeping. Part of our job is to practice situational awareness. Passengers don't see what other people are doing. We (FA's) see everything. Doesn't happen on every flight though...just on some special occasions. Quick tip: When you're flying and you don't want to see dirty stuff, ask to be seated in the first front seats. I suggest you check-in early if you want these seats. It's okay to wait at the airport and lounge around as long as you have your best seats assigned. Besides, there's always duty free to roam around and shop. :) Thank you ladies. Enjoy your next flight. :)

Hi CrisSp. wow, what an eye-opener! I just took a long plane trip in June of this year...needless to say, since I am so claustrophobic, I was determined NOT to use the airplane I sat very still watching movies - one flight was over 7 hours, the other flight 8 I missed any goings on...I watched 3 movies one way and 3 movies on the return trip...But you, who see it all, are in a different position.

Excellent hub to make us aware...perhaps you should send this as a letter to an editor of a newspaper to make people stop and consider their behavior!

That being said, I see a lot of inconsiderate people in rest rooms...the way they leave toilets unflushed, toilet paper all over, and even outside, people spitting on sidewalks, letting their dogs go to the bathroom and leaving it for people to step on.

But there ARE a good amount of considerate people out there...I try to focus on that. Those who leave a mess for others to clean up...there is a law of cause and effect...things have a way of boomeranging back.

      Blessings, Sparklea :)
