Antelope Canyon Page Arizona

Antelope canyon is a spectacular easy half day trip suitable for all the family. Antelope is unlike most slot canyons which require hiking skills, rope skills,a guide or good map skills and good weather. Those challenging and dangerous slots can be see in the movie "127 Hours." Its an excellent film but not for the faint of heart.

Antelope Canyon is set up for easy viewing through tour companies located in downtown Page Arizona which is near lake Powell. For about $25. per adult-less for children-the tour operators piled us into trucks and drove us through scenic desert to the start of the canyon. Walking through and back takes about half an hour. There are other longer tours.

This tour is not suitable for some small children

While we saw some little children who seemed to like being in the slot canyon, others seemed bored and restless. Even spectacular scenery does not always interest a small child. And a one kid seemed  terrified. He was screaming and calmed down as soon as he was taken outside.

You must visit slot canyons on DRY DAYS

You need to go on a dry day because If it rains the tunnels like this act like funnels for torrential floods. People and even cars and trucks are lost in these floods and often never found. Our guide told us about a group of six or more hikers who were told to leave a slot canyon because it was raining in the hills above the slot. They refused and most were lost with no sign of their bodies after the rain created a flash flood which innundated the canyon system.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The guide can show you the best angles for photography. There are also special photographers tours which are longer and to a less seen part of this canyon system. People told me a sunny day is best for photographs. But I took these spectacular photos on a cloudy day.

Other Slot Canyons

In the area of Escalante Utah, and the area between Zion Canyon and Lake Powell there are many spectacular slot canyons. Most are much more inaccessible than the Antelope Canyon system. These other canyons such as Coyote Butes and Zions Narrows require helmets, ropes, rope skills, maybe wet suits depending on the time of year.In the summer they get VERY HOT. In rainy season they can have deadly flash floods. There are guide companies which can take you into these beautiful places if you want a thrilling adventure. Or if you have some rock climbing experience and the equipment you can get information ahead of time from climbing guide books and make your own great adventure.
