Cheap things to do before Summer ends
Take Advantage of the Hot Weather
Labor Day is less than a month away! Before we get out those warmer clothes, we still have time left to enjoy the last days of Summer.
1. GO TO THE BEACH OR POOL
Take your beach umbrella, chair and a picnic and enjoy the sun. Don't forget your sunscreen! Bring along some sanitizing wipes, or soap and water.
Pack your picnic lunch in sealed bags in a cooler. Place food in the bottom, ice on top.
Take plenty of water to drink. Keep yourself hydrated at all times.
Picnic Lunch Suggestion
Veggie subs or hoagies
Potato salad with a vinaigrette dressing
Watermelon slices
Iced tea or water
Cookies or brownies
2. HAVE A BACKYARD BARBECUE
Whether you have a family barbecue or a cookout with friends, do it before Summer ends.
Don't have the money to invite friends? Ask everyone to bring a dish to share.
Barbecue Suggestions
Hot Dogs and/or burgers
Pasta Salad
Cucumbers and onions with Italian dressing
Sliced tomatoes
Corn on the cob
Ice Cream
3. PLANT AN HERB GARDEN
An herb garden not only smells good but is visually delightly. When cool weather arrives, you can bring your pots indoors and put them in a sunny window. Herbs need about 5-6 hours of sunlight a day, so a southern exposure would be the best. Hopefully, this will be your kitchen window.
Some herbs grow together happily like Italian parsley, cilantro and mint. You can plant them in one pot.
Sage, rosemary and thyme are herbs that grow well together.
All of these herbs can be snipped off whenever you need them for a recipe and they will continue to grow.
If you are not very good with plants, you can buy an herb garden kit to make it simple.
4. GO TO A BASEBALL GAME
It doesn't matter if it is a major league game or a local Little League, it is a lot of fun!
5. GO TO A LOCAL FARMER'S MARKET
Beautiful end-of-Summer fruits and vegetables can be picked up at a reasonable price while they are in season. You can even buy extra for canning and freezing.
REFRIGERATOR JAM
3-4 cups sliced fresh strawberries
3 cups sugar
3 ounces strawberry jello
Mix strawberries and sugar. Let stand 6-8 hours or overnight. Cook to boiling and simmer for 10 minutes. Add jello. Cool. Pour into jars or plastic containers. Let stand until lukewarm before refrigerating.
6. TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE DOG PARK
Dogs just love to go to the dog park! It is gated, so you can unleash them, they meet other dogs and they can run and play.
Always take a camera because you might miss that great shot of your dog having fun!
PLAY FRISBEE
OR FIND A FRIEND
AND ALWAYS CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR PET!
Enjoy the rest of the Summer!
