Liepaja-Its Start
The city of Liepaja lays on a strip of land between the Baltic Sea and Tosmare Lake. One of the most important points about Liepaja is that it is an ice free port.
Another important point is it is a naval center. Today it services the NATO nation of Latvia, however way back when it was the base for Tsarist Navy and the armies of the Soviet Union.
The major naval base was established in the 1960s
When the city of Liepaja was transformed into a military base the Soviets stopped all commercial traffic and closed the city that housed over 25 000 military personnel.
It didn't matter where you were from. If you had any reason to get into Liepaja you would need a permit and then only maybe would entry be permitted.

World War II brought much damage to Latvia and Liepaja was no exception.
The city of Liepaja was occupied by the Soviet Union until 1990, when finally independance was regained.
Even with everything the last of Russian troops never left unti 1994.
The base at Karosta is in bad shape and even falling apart but is also a grim reminder of how bad the Cold War really was.
City Of Liepaja-The City Today
As with many Scandinavian and Baltic towns Liepaja has some very beautiful artwork and a splendid display of architecture.
The thing is how it is displayed in Liepaja in confined areas makes it unique to anywhere else. Not to mention the center of Liepaja is crowded with houses buit out of wood and stone.
The city is still very run down but has come a long way and is still working hard to improve things. They have managed to get the port in full working order which has been huge because it has allowed different industries back in again.
The city is still beautiful with its spectacular architecture and beaches like no other you have seen.
Since those days Liepaja is quickly becoming known for its up to date culture with the Symphony Orchestra, galleries and museums. Also any bar and eatery has local bands and talent always playing inside or outside.
One street you would need to visit is called Tirgonu street. It has gained great notoriety as a pedestrian fairway. It has the most interesting of cafes, bars, shops and clubs on it.

The estimated population of Liepaja is around 100 000 people.
Without a doubt the best time to visit the city of Liepaja is the summer time as it is well known for its outside activities.
Some things that you absolutely must see when there are St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral and The Holocaust Memorial which is a grim reminder of the many holocaust victims that came from Liepaja.
And of course there is St. Annes Luthern Church which is guessed to be as old as 1508.
Something of interest to many people is spending time in the old military prison. As eerie as it is many people even elect to spend a night in the Liepaja point of interest.
