Kerala tourism: 'Elaveezhapoonchira';Green valley in the sky?

Updated on December 12, 2017

Elaveezhapoonchira’ meaning the place where no leaves fall, is a beautiful place lying at 3200 feet between Kottayam and Idukki district of Kerala.

Journey starts from ‘Kanjara’ a place of Idukki, we are moving through the high ranges. Moving almost 7km the surroundings slowly changing, the tarred road ended. We have to travel through the hard terrain filled with smaller rock pieces. Our heart beats suddenly raised as we are travelling through the dangerous path. While looking sideways the depth of the view is increasing, some of my friends closed their eyes in fear of seeing this.

Finally reaching above poonchira we jumped out of the jeep to see the scenic beauty made by goddess of earth. Fogs make the surrounding difficult to see. Drops of water from the leaves falling to our legs makes us to freeze. DTPC funded Poonchira resort is available there. We decided to stay in their to escape from the cold night. This resort is 3200 feet high, where the facilities are limited. No electricity or mobile range is available in here. Water taken from lower place and candle light is the only option available in the resort. While going to sleep I thought of lying in a lonely place on earth.

Wake up in the cold snowy morning. We can see a lot of green mountains around us, but no trees to make the leaves fall….

A small path is lying through the mountain, that's taken us to the police wireless station. This place is the head of poonchira. “If we stand in here we can see the sky view of four districts of Kerala (Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Ernakulam)”. Malankara dam and surrounded small water flows makes to look like a google map…….

Enjoyed the beauty of nature and starts to travel downwards to the other side of the mountain. We heard about a saint's cave in there, but we don’t know where is it. For our luck we say a local guy, he has taken us to the saint's cave. Only one can move between the rocks to reach the entrance of the cave. The entrance is only 3 feet tall. We have to get through there to see the inside of the cave. Inside about 15 peoples can sleep freely. We have taken some water coming through the rocks and sit there for one hour.

The outside starts to darken, thunder started, wind blowing hardly, the rain is coming. We have to reach the resort before the rain.

Our walking speed increased…………………..

Getting in Here:

Even though the place is in Kottayam district, easy to reach in here is from Thodupuzha (Idukki district). Travel about 15km through thodupuzha-mulamattam road to reach Kangar. From there take a jeep to the poonchira resort (almost 7km from Kangar).
