Dramatic Adventure in Durmitor National Park, Montenegro
Durmitor National Park, in Montenegro, is a spectacular landscape of high, pine-clad mountains which plunge down into the 1000m deep Tara Canyon, with the river Tara roaring in its depths. It is an epicentre of Montenegrin adventure and activity holidaying, which is why we found ourselves making for this northern region in the country on this stage of our Montenegrin adventure, in search of adrenalin rushes and breathtaking scenery – and we were definitely not disappointed.
The centre of the Park's operations is the mountain town of Žabljak. The road to get there was an adventure in and of itself – our hearts were in our mouths as we navigated the winding and loose stones, ruts and bumps of the mountain pass. Fortunately, the sturdy 4x4 we had hired proved up to the task, and in the end after a long, long slow journey, we reached the camp site near the town where we would be spending the night.
Durmitor National Park, and the Tara river, are famous for their excellent rafting, which is said to be amongst the best in Europe. It also provides some amazing hiking opportunities and in winter the skiing here is also said to be varied and fun. We were here primarily for the river.
Waking early, we went off to our rendezvous point and joined the group of eager rafters on the river's edge. We had opted for a two day rafting trip, which began in the village of Šljivansko. After our briefing and kitting out etc. we headed off down the breathtakingly gorgeous gorge. We flowed to the rhythm of the river, sometimes heart-shakingly fast through the rapids, and at other times gently and calmly floating downstream, giving us a chance to recover from the bursts of adrenaline.
The canyon walls towered over our heads, but the sun shone brightly on the water so we did not feel trapped or confined in any way. We were just awe-stuck by the staggering beauty of the place.
After a while, we stopped beneath the large Đurđevića Tara Bridge and cooled down with a swim in the amazingly turquoise-blue water. The Monastery of St. Archangel was a beautiful sight in the sunshine. Then we continued on down the river along the most picturesque section of the gorge.
This was a two day rafting adventure, so we spent had a dinner that we had never been more ready for in our lives, and spent the night at the Radovan Luka Motel, where we slept like logs after our long day on the river.
The second day of rafting was as much fun as the first. After a lazy start and plenty of stops for photographs and swimming to cool down, we reached perhaps the most beautiful section we had yet seen – the waterfall at Sige Bajlovica drew the eye as it cascaded into the river. The surging, roaring river Tara carried us swiftly onwards, as we passed over bumps and through eddies and swirling pools that tossed us about like dolls in the raft as we clu
