How To Save Money While Traveling- Cheap Accommodation

Updated on July 4, 2013

How To Save Money While Traveling

Are you wanting to go on a holiday overseas or even in your own country yet hesitate because of the expense involved getting to your destination, accommodation - food - sightseeing and more ?

One of the best ways to save while traveling is on accommodation as most of the time we want to be out exploring the area & only use the accommodation to sleep so why pay a fortune on expensive hotels ?

Save your money for sightseeing and trying new cuisine as you travel and learn the best ways to travel cheap !

We are planning a trip around Europe and Britain next year so will be doing a lot of research on

How To Save Money While Traveling and will pass on what information I come up with to you as we want to keep accommodation costs to a minimum where possible .

Travel light

Travel light & use a suitcase with wheels where possible !
Travel light & use a suitcase with wheels where possible !

Save while traveling

Watch out for Airfare Sales , Cheapest flights to save on your airfares .

Visit the visitor centre for free maps , find out about free concerts / free buses etc in the places you visit .

Check for bus /train/city passes to save money .

Travel light so you don't get charged for extra luggage .

Where possible use a refillable bottle for water rather than buying water all the time .

Buy rolls & filling & make your own lunch /dinner where you can

When eating out watch for lunchtime specials rather than dinner .

Have a picnic , bring your own wine & food , save a fortune on drinks while still enjoying the scenery .

Buy books at an op shop rather than new every time then swap books / magazines as you travel .

Enjoy the outdoors in a tent !
Enjoy the outdoors in a tent !

Camp In My Garden

I came across a site called "Camp in my garden " where you can camp in someones front or back yard from 3 pound /$6 a night per person which is great when the weather is reasonable !

What we love about it is that we don't have to carry a tent with us as so many have the tents already there so if you love camping this is well worth checking out !

There are Camping gardens across Europe and Britain , some are in the cities, others are by streams in the countryside .

Unique Accomodation

With Airbnb you can save on accommodation around the world with rooms starting from just $10 a night as well as make money from home renting out a spare roon or just referring others that take advantage of the site .

There is also unique accommodation available so there is something to suit all budgets as you travel from a treehouse to beautiful apartments .

We used Airbnb in London to save on accommodation . It was a nice home by transport , a few shops nearby and low price which we reccommend if you are looking for cheap accommodation in London.

Mary Pool - Free Camping

Free Camping and best ways to travel cheap

If you are planning to travel around Australia keep in mind that there are free camping sites as you travel where you can chill out by a river or in the country and enjoy nature at its best .

Some free camping sites even provide firewood so you can cook your meals on an open fire !

You can't get any cheaper than free !

Only camp where it is obviously OK to do so and leave it tidy as some free camps are being shut down due to inconsiderate campers & make sure you put fires out before leaving .

Volunteer Overseas/ Stay at an Organic farm in Ireland

If you are one of the many caring people that enjoy helping others then there is plenty of opportunities to volunteer worldwide and one of the benefits apart from providing your help is free accommodation.

Help is needed in many countries from private people wanting help in their accommodation or farms to groups like Red Cross asking for workers for orphanages or building /sustainable projects./

To help on a farm & have free accommodation while traveling try this site http://www.wwoof.org/

We stayed at a lovely organic farm in Ireland with amazing views , Public transport close by and not far from Dublin. The accommodation is lovely and the owner Paddy Byrne is friendly and easy to get on with . Paddy's details are on the woof site to book for a stay.

Nanny Jobs

I have been to Verbier in Switzerland on a paid trip as a Nanny so why not check out Nanny wanted ads for people needing Nannies overseas if you have the experience needed .

You can also get live in Nanny jobs where you have a room or flat free of charge + pay & time to explore on your time off !

I was paid to visit the Millenium Dome / Travel to York and have a few days up there / A day trip to France with a 10 yr old boy and much much more !

Make sure you have checkable references and the appropriate visa for working .

If you prefer not to work with children there are other live in jobs available such as bar work-

Chalet cleaning in Europe

Working in Ski fields

Work on a cruise ship .....

Visit a visitor centre for maps

Would you use these sites to save money while traveling ?

www.camping-garden.com is an interactive free website. The aim is to connect people offering a camp site in their Garden to people looking for a place to camp. Like couchsurfing, this website is available all over the world,

For a stop or for a stay, with your tent or your camping car, choose among the gardens, farms, or sites available for rent.

Excellent ideas! I love it! I once read about seeing the world from cargo ships. You can rent out a very plain cabin for a fraction of the cost of a cruise line and get to see more interesting places. Not so sure about the modern day pirates tho. Voted up and shared.

Having read some of your hubs I realize what I have always known. All the Aussies I have met are more free spirited than the English and Americans. Luckily I wasn't raised to be "American" although I was born and raised in America.

Even with my special needs I still managed to camp out. One of my favorite places is about two miles from the highest elevation in my part of the state. In my end of Nebraska this is a joke, the highest elevation is just over 1000 ft.

There were only two months a year which are safe to camp there though. Summer thunderstorms and winter snows make it inaccessable other than four wheel drive vehicles. Even four wheel drive vehicles get stuck. More than once it took a steel wheeled tractor to drag me out.

I am looking forward to hearing about your trip. I am too far out, there is no public transportation to the town I live in. If you did show up I am sure someone here could put a tent up for you. I have shared my house for over two years, always room for one more, we have had up to 16 living here at the same time. There are nine at the present moment.

I love the idea of camping gardens. Too many people have to have amenities and fancy places to stay while traveling. It is so much fun to roll with the punches and find unique and different ways to see the world. And saving money is not a bad idea.

I am not quite ready to venture overseas, but it is good to have these suggestions if the time to present itself. I could easily be a nanny, not only would I enjoy it but I would learn so much of the culture while traveling. Great share on this topic.

A very fun article to read, if you love the outdoors, camping definitely sounds like the ideal opportunity!

If you're not much of an outdoor person, look for a job overseas that pays for your accomodation.

I remember I applied for a job overseas, apart from the flight fares - they gave me a room, internet, food and drink and I got to visist the rest of the country and experience the culture on my days off.
