Ideas for Family Excursions in the Spring

Are you looking for some ideas for your family holiday this Spring? There are many things to see and do with children in tow. Cities and towns are full of museums, activities and entertainments. But as the weather gets better and we move into Spring, why not consider taking your family on countryside excursions? Whether you are on holiday in a certain location or taking day trips from home, most people will be able to enjoy activities along the following lines:

The traditional British staple of a good old time beside the seaside. Enjoy the nostalgia of the old-fashioned beach holiday – complete with paddling, sand castles and ice cream. Or, if you and your kids are looking for something a bit different, why not try a beach activity together? There are many places in the UK and abroad where you can try out surfing, wakeboarding, kite surfing, wind surfing, kayaking, sailing, and a whole range of other activities. There is much more to do beside the sea than just sit in the sun and have a picnic – though that can be fun too! You could go fossil hunting, or observe the life in rock pools, collect mussels to eat, go fishing, or collect seaweed for the garden. All activities that many children will enjoy.

Why not consider a hill walk on a sunny spring day? A walk does not have to be strenuous and can help you all stretch your legs and get fit. The views from a vantage point high over surrounding countryside often make the whole thing worthwhile and endorphins will be boosted by the exercise.

Other active pursuits like cycling or canoeing down a river can also be great fun.

So get out there this Spring, and enjoy the great outdoors with your family.

Whether you go to a special centre offering outward bound and adventure activities in a woodland near your home or holiday accommodation, or simply enjoy the wonders of unspoiled nature, a trip to the forest can be more than just a walk in the woods. Why not find a zip-line, or an obstacle course and challenge the whole family to complete certain tasks? Bond as you carry out adventure activities, or simply climb trees: a chance for everyone to get in touch with the natural world. Alternatively, turn your trip into an expedition. Try a scavenger hunt for certain leaves and seeds and other woodland items, or try your hand at a spot of den building and learn other survival skills, like foraging. Simply watching the native wildlife can also be fun for the whole family.

Most kids love a farm, with animals to pet, milk, feed and catch. A day spent happily amidst the muck can definitely be a day well spent – educational as well as great fun. It is a good idea for children to know about the food chain, and where their food comes from. A farm visit is also a good way to get them out in the fresh air and away from screens. In a similar vein, horse riding can be a fun way for the whole family to get out and about in the countryside.
