If so, you must not miss Kumarakom, where beauty lies not in the beholder’s eyes but in the backwaters, the greenery, the bird sanctuary, the house boats, the lovely island and so on.Kumarakom is a picturesque village in Kottayam district of Kerala .It is actually a cluster of islands in the VembanadLake. It will take only twenty minutes to reach Kumarakom from Kottayam town via road. While traveling to the place itself we can feel the real beauty and innocence of rural life. On both sides of the road there are plenty of coconut trees, paddy fields and rural shops selling fish, coir and handicrafts. Besides this, there are canals through which people rowing small yachts, carry coconuts and by-products to various places. Definitely this is a scene of untainted village life which we cannot find anywhere else.
Boating is one thing that cannot be missed while in Kumarakom.It is a favorite place for tourists, especially those who wish to enjoy their honey moon in luxurious house boats. From the boat jetty in Kumarakom tourists can go to the nearby island called “Pathiramanal” and on the way there is the flourishing flora that is the home for a variety of birds. This bird sanctuary witnesses the coming and going of so many migratory birds.Cuckoo, Owls, Waterfowl, Parrots, Wood Beetle, Water Ducks etc are some of the birds seen in the bird sanctuary. Either one can have a walk through the sanctuary or can just view it from the boat.
The biggest attraction still remains and that is the beautiful island “Pathiramanal”.It is situated in the VembanadLake and it will take about fourty-five minutes to reach the island from the boat jetty. There are big and small motor boats frequently going to the island with a lot of tourists from different parts of the world. The boat journey itself is mind smoothening as we can have so many enjoyments on the way. The decorated and luxurious house boats anchored in the lake, the mangroves on the banks of the lake and even the languid ripples fill our minds with pleasure and excitement. The island of “Pathiramanal” is a great place of serenity where the ecosystem exists quite natural without any interference.
