Las Galletas is a Canary Islands fishing village on the south coast of Tenerife

Updated on January 21, 2013

Las Galletas is a seaside village in the south

Las Galletas is a charming Canary Islands fishing village on the coast of the extreme south of Tenerife. Las Galletas has a marina and more than one beach and over the years has become increasingly popular with tourists.

It is next to the residential area of Costa del Silencio and near to the villages of El Fraile in one direction and Las Rosas in another. The Ten-Bel self-catering resort and residential complex area is right next to Las Galletas as well.

Las Galletas has a waterfront promenade where you will find a choice of bar restaurants and there are more in the village itself as well as along the marina section.

Vai Moana and the Easter Island paintings

Las Galletas has a wide range of shops including a health store and even a place where you can have a Tarot card reading. It has a school and also the traditional Spanish square.

At night live entertainment is offered in several bars. One of the best of these was known as Vai Moana and it is right at the end of the beach by the road coming into Las Galletas from El Fraile. This bar has Easter Island statues painted on its outside walls and often had bands and musicians performing there. It also hosted special Full Moon parties. I have used the past tense because it has currently closed down for reasons unknown but I would like to hope it will open again some time in future. In the meantime there are plenty of other bars you can try.

The main beach that is next to the road is very popular with bathers and for people who want to soak up the sun. Because Las Galletas is in the south of the island the weather is usually very good there too.

There are stalls on the seafront selling freshly caught fish, which is continuing its past as village which was built for the local fishermen.

There are dive services available and along the Marina del Sur you will also find boats that do marine excursions and cruises.

Las Galletas is near enough to the airport for the south of Tenerife and has a regular bus service. You can get buses to Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, and with a short walk up into the Coast del Silencio area there are buses to Granadilla, El Médano and even all the way up to Santa Cruz in the north of the island.

If you are staying in one of the resorts in the south, such as Los Cristianos, it is well worth taking a bus ride to Las Galletas to sample its delights. Las Galletas has plenty to attract tourists but still has plenty of the charm of a traditional Spanish fishing village.
