Changu Lake also called Tsongmo Lake
Changu Lake also called "Tsongmo Lake" means "source of the lake" is a lake situated around 35 - 40 km away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. It is a natural lake on top of mountains. It is 3780 meter (12400 feet) above sea level and oval in shape, 1 Km long and fifteen meters deep. The lake freezes during the winter months. Best time to visit is Mid May to August. The area is controlled by the Indian Army and required special permission to visit the place. They will ask you to visit the lake before noon due to inclement weather. Local travel agents will help you to get permission. Bus ticket from Gangtok to Changu Lake and back will cost Rs. 150/- Cabs and Jeeps are available at Gangtok for Rs. 550/- to Rs. 900/- Heavy woolen cloths required to be worn throughout the year. Rides on Yaks are offered at the lakeside. You can have tea and snacks at the lakeside during the tourist season. It is advised to avoid traveling to Changu Lake those who have breathing problem due to the scarcity of air at this altitude.
Getting There: Nearest Airport - Bagdogra. Helicopter Service is available from Bagdogra to Gangtok. Or 4 hours drive by car.
Nearest Railway Station: New Jalpaiguri. From New Jalpaiguri you can travel by Road to Gangtok, it will take 4-5 hours.
