San Francisco - What you can do in a day

Updated on December 24, 2015

A Day in San Francisco

Are you doing a stopover in San Francisco & wondering what you can do in a day? The answer is plenty if you plan the day right!

I was working as a nanny in London for a while. When it came time for my trip back to Australia I was longing to see my 3 daughters but felt I should see a new place on the way home so I decided to have 24 hours in San Francisco!

I booked a room at a hostel that picks you up at the airport for convenience.

The internet was a great help & I organised my day in advance for the maximum benefit of my time!

Ferry to Alcatraz

I booked a ferry trip early morning out to Alcatraz Island which was from the mid 1930's until the mid 1960's, Alcatraz was America 's premier maximum-security prison, the final stop for the nation's most incorrigible inmates.many of the inmates who called "the Rock" home.

As I love boat trips this was a must do on the list . It was a pleasant day & I was staying a stroll away from the wharf where the ferry left from Pier 39 ,

It was fascinating strolling through the prison & looking back at the city seeing how tormenting it must have been for the inmates all those years they were on the Island.

It would have been horrible being a prisoner there, no wonder some tried to escape.

The day I was there a film crew were wandering around & they asked permission to film me !

I never saw it , was supposed to be used on a flight somewhere around the world.

Cable Car

After the cruise I spent some time looking around Fishermans Wharf before getting a cable car to the Steep zig zag street there.

I walked back down the hill where there was   a music festival so I enjoyed the music with a drink as My day was fast coming to an end .

It was then time to get back to the hostel , be taken to the airport to go back to Australia!
