The Best Hunting and Fishing Stores in Evansville Indiana

Updated on September 10, 2011

Evansville, Indiana's third largest city

Located on the banks of the Ohio River, Evansville Indiana is the third largest city in the state. Smack dab in the middle of the Midwest, folks that live hear, enjoy hunting and fishing hot spots other hunters and anglers, quite honestly can only dream of having some day. With all this hunting and fishing going on, hunters and anglers need to know where the best hunting and fishing stores in Evansville Indiana are.

As hunters and anglers, our quest starts on the east side of the city; Evansville like any other city has its north side mostly comprised of upper income professionals. Southside where the blue color working class folks call home, the Westside of town is famous for the fall festival which is the second largest event of its kind in the United States, and then there is the east side of town where the newest and greatest shopping centers are located.

Simply the best way to stay dry, Frogg Toggs

Evansville east side is known for great shoping

With all the big guys taking advantage of the familiar watering hole thing, a hunter and angler can visit Wall-Mart, Dicks Sporting Goods and even Gander Mountain within a rocks throw of each other.

The east side Wal-Mart is no place for a serious hunter or angler, the worse shopping experience of my life. Absolutely no customer service, lack luster displays, and outdated or cheaply made stuff filled the shelves and displays. I spent over thirty minutes looking for the hunting and fishing section, another thirty minutes looking for something worth wile, and another thirty minutes at the check out aisle, just to purchase a can of deep woods off. Ok I will give the devil his due, the deep woods off is something worth wile.

Having escaped Wal-Mart with my sanity in tack, my next adventure was to take me into Dicks Sporting Goods.

Ever check out Bow-fishing, it is tons of fun...

The Best Hunting and Fishing Stores in Evansville Indiana

Making my way through the door, to what to my wondering eyes should appear? The Under Armor display, a quite anatomically correct female form, I should add Sporting a rather snug fitting red-hot gear outfit, which had we wondering if I had just walked into a Victoria’s Secret. The one thing of which I was sure, we are not in Wall-mart and that my friend is a very good thing indeed.

Pushing past all the soccer clothing, another Under Armor display, this time the male version, and the entire assorted warm up pants and shirts I made my way to the lodge area.

found my self-wondering how many salt-water fishing hot spots were in the Midwest, judging from the abundance of salt-water tackle there must be a lot.

Displayed overhead they have a good selection of canoes as well as camping tents, tables and chairs. Everything a hunter or angler would need to outfit their hunting and fishing camp.

Making my way to the gun counter, I was extremely disappointed in the lack of a meaningful selection of hunting rifles, shotguns, or muzzleloaders. All I could do was hang my head and go back to the fishing section and wonder where the nearest salt-water fishing hot spot was.

The Best selection of Hunting and Fishing supplies in Evansville Indiana

The next stop on my quest to find The Best Hunting and Fishing Stores in Evansville Indiana just happen to be the local Gander Mountain. Walking through the front doors was akin to walking into a hunting and fishing mega store.

There to my left was a fishing department as big as the whole hunting and fishing sections at Wall-Mart and Dicks combined. Straight in front of me, I saw hunting and outdoor clothing in all the popular camo patterns. To my left was hunting boots, hiking boots, flip-flops and all manner of footwear. Then almost like a shining star in the nighttime sky, there it was, the gun section located all the way in the back of the store.

Gander Mountain’s selection of firearms is the best in Evansville, They have shotguns for turkey hunters, waterfowelers, upland bird hunters, and even deer hunters can find something they like. They have a great selection of hunting and target shooting rifles; they have handguns for hunters, personal protection, and plinking. Just about the time I had struck the mother lode, I checked out the prices, oh my God, Gander’s prices are extremely high; I think they were full retail. I stopped right there and with my hand on my wallet ran for the door. All the while thinking, I know what I want and more importantly, I know how much I should be able to get it, and Ganders prices are much too high.

Which brings me to, The Best Hunting and Fishing Store in the Evansville Indiana area, located just a short fifteen-minute drive to Boonville Indiana.

Bucks and Jakes Outfitters, is located on state highway 62 on Boonville Indiana’s west side. Where the friendly sales staff walks the walk and talks the talk. They have the best archery department in the area, where archers can pick-up and hold in their hands bows made by, Mathews, Hoyt, Bear Archery, Bowtech, and Diamond and let us not forget PSE. The best part is they have the best prices I have found anywhere number one, and they have an indoor archery range where you can shoot all day if you like.

Academy Sports is coming to town next to Sams, they have prices that will put Gander Mountain to shame. They open October 17th. If someone wants a part or full time job there now is a great time to apply while they are staffing. I priced a few guns and such from them and on glocks for example they are $100 cheaper on the same model. Competiton is good for consumers so everyone should be happy.
