The Boiling Pot: Great Seafood in Mobile and Montgomery
Are you looking for a great casual spot for fried and steamed seafood in southern Alabama? If you like your seafood to have a little bit of kick and your restaurants to offer a lot of variety, you don't need to look any further than The Boiling Pot.
The Boiling Pot started out with a single location in the southwestern part of Mobile County known as Tillman's Corner and was an immediate hit among locals. The smell of crab boil and Creole spices drifting from the building quickly attracted crowds, and soon there was a line from the ordering counter all the way out the door during peak meal periods.
After operating with this single location for a while, the restaurant opened a second location in Mobile, AL near Interstate 65, at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and Montlimar Drive. This location quickly became an immediate hit as well. There's also a location in Montgomery, AL, which is the state's capital. I won't be surprised at all if this great restaurant expands even more in the future.
The Boiling Pot's Menu
The Boiling Pot offers an excellent selection of Louisiana-style seafood dishes (i.e., huge portions that are spicy and either fried or steamed). You can choose from among a great selection of overstuffed Poboy sandwiches, wrap sandwiches, fried plates, steamed plates, and generous portions of side orders. For those who'd prefer something other than seafood, the restaurant offers a chicken wrap, sausage Poboy and sausage side.
Fried Seafood at the Boiling Pot
At The Boiling Pot, you can order a fried seafood plate, an overstuffed Poboy in a whole or half size, a wrap sandwich, or a side.
The whole Poboys are easily big enough for two people (although my husband, who is a native of New Orleans, can eats a whole one every time we go to this restaurant because it makes him feel like he's "back home"). No matter which size you order, your sandwich will be served in a basket, with shrimp covering the delicious French bread and spilling over into the basket because there are just so many. The wraps are a good choice for those with a smaller appetite who want to enjoy a sandwich meal.
The fried seafood plates are also a very generous potion and served with French Fries and hush puppies, or your choice of any two vegetable sides. If you don't want the entire plate portion, you can actually order a side of your favorite fried seafood, which will provide you with more that you get at most restaurants. I usually order a side of shrimp or crawfish tails and a side of hush puppies.
Fried seafood choices include:
- Catfish
- Crawfish
- Shrimp
- Soft Shell Crab
- Tilapia
- Oyster
- Catch of the Day Selection
Steamed Seafood at the Boiling Pot
The Boiling Pot's steamed seafood plate choices include Gulf Shrimp, Royal Red Shrimp, Canadian Snow Crabs and Dungeness Crabs. Each steamed plate comes with two pieces of corn on the cob and two boiled new potatoes. You can also order a shrimp feast (if you have someone to share with) that comes with three pounds of shrimp and four pieces of corn and four potatoes.
Side Dish Options
In addition to being able to order sides of each fried seafood item, you can choose among many other great side dishes at The Boiling Pot. Options include:
- Baked Beans
- Broccoli
- Coleslaw
- Corn
- Crawfish Pie
- French Fries
- Green Beans
- Gumbo
- Hushpuppies
- Onion Rings (described by my husband as the best onion rings ever)
- Potatoes
- Sausage
- Side Salad
