The monasteries of Ladakh (Little Tibet)
A journey to a Buddhist corner of the Indian Himalayas
In the shadow of the high Himalayas, lies Ladakh. Though politically, a part of India, it is culturally, ethnically and in its high altitude mountain plateau landscape, really an extension of Tibet. In fact Ladakh was part of the Tibetan kingdom in medieval times.
I have travelled in Ladakh for over twenty years now and have seen its people change as the modern world increasingly encroaches into this mountain fastness. This is the land where the game of polo was born, a land where Central Asia, Tibet, India and Kashmir all come together, reflected even today in the faces of the Ladakhi people.
Join me in this photographic journey through this dramatic land watered by the Indus River.
