Croatia has a population of 4.2 million inhabitants and neighbouring countries; such as Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Hungary.
Travelling to Dubrovnik and beyond allows for an enjoyable experience. Whether it's your first time in Croatia or a second time around, you will want more from this peaceful place.
You can visit Lokrum Island on a ferry between Lokrum and the midpoint of the Old Town.
The island is popular for its plants. A short trip to the Historic sites can enlighten you about the mysterious stories told about Lokrum.
The plateau has a picturesque monastery, restaurants and cafes; I was amazed by the interesting island that many people have mentioned.
The scattered paths are made of old stone. Island visits are unique and fascinating. The many peacocks on Lokrum were a surprise.
Rocky beaches and the views are spectacular. Explore the old monastery on Lokrum.
I found out that some parts of Game of Thrones were filmed in this monastery. You can easily find a spot to suntan Be prepared for the rocky spots.
There is a lot of green seas and lakes in the heart of the island. When in Dubrovnik and you want to get away from the crowded streets go to Lokrum island.
You won't travel far away but will enjoy the surrounding areas. The beautiful nature and the small lake with rocky beaches will surprise you.
Wild animals are free and are noticed around the island. The walk will be a challenge for individuals who are not fit for the challenge and for those who ignore wearing comfortable shoes.
Things to do in Dubrovnik and Beyond are fascinating and many tourists enjoy their time on the beach.
I know anywhere in Dubrovnik is great to visit. The cable car is a must in Dubrovnik. To have a good view of the gorgeous shoreline you got to get up there.
The top view is stunning.
- They have a small gift shop and café bar.
- For your convenience the restroom and the building are air-conditioned.
- Don't look for disappointment because you won't be disappointed.
- It is worth the long wait.
- The cable car may not be for everyone.
- If you want a cable car experience, try this one.
- The cable car was open for three years and was damaged during the Civil War.
Ancient city walls of Dubrovnik
- I walked the entire walk around three times on the Dubrovnik city walls.
- The walk could take an hour or more depending on how you go along in the scorching heat.
Cavtat
My first trip to Cavtat was enjoyable.
People discover Cavtat and travel there to experience another laid-back lifestyle. You can travel by boat to Cavtat from Dubrovnik, or by bus.

A charming place in a small village.
There are many restaurants and café bars.
- You don't have to go to the café bars.
- It is not my style to sit at café bars and to have chat with friends. It is a cultural effect in most parts of Europe.
- Cavtat is famous for its large town and people enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
- Café bars are everywhere here and are a way of life.
- I like the pebble beach. It’s attractive and tucked into the peninsula.
- The region known as Konavle stretches out further to the Montenegrin border and this includes Cavtat.
- The green vineyards, and olive orchards, catch the eye in an instant.
- The folklore dances take place in Cilipi every Sunday and are a fun-filled event. There are ferries to three islands.
- I went on a trip to the Elaphiti Islands an unforgettable one. The Kolocep, Sipan and Lopud Islands.
You won't find many sandy beaches. When travelling in Konavle you can enjoy sightseeing in many villages, and nature. The unspoiled nature of a special countryside is unique.
The Konavle valley lies between the clear waters of the Adriatic Sea and a mountain known as the Sniježnica mountain.
You can enjoy a full tour of the Konavle Valley to taste the local wine produced at the wineries.
The countryside has its own natural beauty to offer. A visit to the Sokol Kula which is also known as the Falcon Tower is breathtaking.
You will notice the ice cream stall close to the castle. Souvenirs from the southern part of Croatia which you will not find in any other part of Croatia are sold here.
The fresh air and the scent of different herbs is a memorable experience too. A short walk around the village and you will learn about another culture in a traditional manner.
The mill is located on the Ljuta River the water is icy cold in summer. Here you will see corn-grinding and cloth processing.
You can swap your travel idea from Dubrovnik streets to a quiet outing to see the natural beauty of rural Dalmatia. The view of the rural area is different and quiet.
Rent a car or travel by bus at your convenience. Look out the window to view the medieval roads where you will notice the ruins of old buildings from the war.
Most buildings are not renewed due to Serbian owners not claiming their property. Explore another part of Croatia the southern region known for its natural beauty. The Sokol Tower has a small gift shop and a café bar.
A forgotten old castle has invited many tourists since it opened. The rural area share the traditional ways of the culture. You won't find such traditional values in many parts of the world, especially in this modern day.
Life changed and will not be the same again. I learned to accept my life in a foreign country.
The places I visited, taught me about the history of Croatia and the smaller areas part of Konavle.
A famous Croatian painter Vlaho Bukovac is an artist through family history.
The stone-built house of the nineteenth century is a spacious two-story building. This artist moved to Paris after placing his new paintings in the gallery.
Things to do in Dubrovnik and Beyond
An interest in Saint Nikola's church is built in Cavtat.
- The building holds the valuable paintings of the great artists Benedetto Genarri, and Vlaho Bukovac and of the painter Carmelo Reggio.
- The old monasteries are of great value to the history of Konavle.
- The museums and galleries are of interest to many visitors.
- I enjoy travelling around Croatia and cherish the southeastern part the most because I live here.
- My journey has taken me far and wide and I manage my new life well.
- Under the blue skies or the grey skies, I chose to be happy and nothing and no one will change the way I live in a foreign place.
- I met several local people and spoke with an open mind to them.
- New ideas come to mind and I go with the flow.
- It has been a long time living here and I can't see myself living as that local person.
Why can't I let go and be that local person?
I am different in my beliefs and methods of living from what I was taught to what I have learned in this present life.
Years have passed by and each time I listen to the negative conversations, it makes me think of how I gained my positive lifestyle in Croatia.
Determination is power.
I don't fall into that depressed mood. It is not good for me. Life is precious and I chose to live each day as a new beginning for me.
