What To Take On Holiday? Top 5 Travel Essentials

Updated on January 23, 2015

Working in travel, I am always being asked "what do I need to pack for my holiday?" so I have used my many years of experience to put together a list of 5 of the top travel essentials which will also comply with the different airline rules and regulations so you don't get caught out. This is also a reminder of what you need to take with you so that you don't get to your hotel and realise that you have forgotten that holiday essential, so we will start with number 1 which is the most obvious but I have come across many people who get this wrong.

1 - Suitcase

This sounds an obvious one, but with the current airline rules about luggage allowance, its always good to choose a lightweight suitcase, this allows you to pack a few extra bits and bobs. I have always found having an expandable case to be useful for travelling back from holiday, having all those holiday souvenirs which you have bought for everyone, an expandable case will ensure you can get those extra things in. Pick a suitcase which stands out too, a brightly coloured or different suitcase will not only be unique to you but there is no chance of a mix up at the baggage collection.

2 - Scales

Buying yourself a set of luggage scales to weigh your luggage before you get to the airport will save you money once you get to the airport. I have been caught out at the airport with having a suitcase or hand luggage which was over airline restrictions, I had to pay for each kilo that I was over and this can get rather expensive (an expense which is avoidable). they are excellent value for money and are simple and easy to use.

3 - Travel Bottles

Since the airport security has stepped up a gear at the airports, you are no longer able to take your ordinary bottles of shampoo or favourite moisturiser in bottles over 100ml in your hand luggage. These bottle bags are transparent bottles and pots for you to fill and are all within the EU rules and regulations. Don't be stopped and have your favourite and expensive toiletries taken off you because if they don't comply with rules, they will take them off you.

4 - Suntan lotion

There are no rules and regulations for protecting yourself with suntan lotion but this is one holiday essential that you can't forget to take with you. Short and simple, if you forget your suntan lotion you will not only damage your skin which could cause serious long term health issues but it will ruin your holiday that you have saved all year to pay for, when you are holed up in your hotel room because you are burnt and sore, so stock up on your suntan lotion and make sure you get the correct factor for your skin.

5 - Beach Towel

I'm sure a lot of us have arrived at our holiday destination to then realise that we have forgotten our beach towel so had to go and buy an overly priced beach towel from a local shop or flea market abroad. So make sure you purchase one before hand and you will save yourself some extra money which can be better spent on some of the local treasures and souvenirs.

So as you can see, my top 5 travel essentials are very basic and simple tips but they will save you time, stress and money. They are an absolute must when travelling on holiday or vacation. By remembering to take or pack these before you travel, like I said before it will save you the stress and cost of having to go hunting whilst on holiday when you realise that you have forgotten to pack them. One last tip of what not to forget and which is probably the most important item of your holiday, don't forget your toothbrush.
