Tumut - Top Family Vacation Spot

Updated on June 2, 2011

Tumut is a small sleepy town between Sydney and Melbourne, the two primary cities in Australia. It’s a rough 4-5 hour drive from either city. The drive to Tumut is by itself a beautiful experience. Farms that stretch without an end, live stock, old Victorian style building, rusting wind mills… It is one of the places you must visit around Sydney.

Did you know: Tumut was one of the short listed cities to become the capital of Australia. But Canberra, a new city was created as the capital of Australia.

The best places to stay in Tumut are the log cabin you find right in front of Tumut River. There are several log cabins that are very comfortable with a full kitchen, 3-4 bed rooms, gas heater and fireplace. Some of the log cabins serve breakfast in the morning (Isn’t that wonderful!) for free.

Tumut also lies on the foot hills of Snowy Mountain, a popular ski resort (if you are a skiing nut). You can save yourself some money by not staying on the Ski resorts on Snowy Mountain or Selwyn Snow Fields. It will be a less than one hour drive to Snowy Mountain or Selwyn Snow Fields from here.

You can even light your own camp fire at night, right in front of the cabin to enjoy some personal time with your family. The river that flows right in front of your cabins is full of fish and you can spend some time fishing. There are trout farms that are very close by for die hard fishing fans.

Things to do: Skiing & Snow Sport, Fishing, River Walk, Trekking, Golfing,
Places to Visit: Tumut Dam, Yarrangobilly Stalagmite Caves, Snowy Mountains, Selwyn Snow Fields.

Type of Place: Family Vacation, Honey Moon, Skiing Holiday or a much needed break.
Best time to visit: July-September if you like Cold weather or Snow sports,Any time if it is a vacation.

It is a very private, quiet and beautiful place. If you want to spend some spend some quality time with your family or friends, Tumut is highly recommended but make sure you stay in one of those log cabins in front of the river.
