Vacation Lakes Entrance

Lakes Entrance is located on the East Coast of Victoria some 200 miles (320 km)
from Melbourne.
It has been a very busy fishing centre, Bulluck Island being the hub for the fishing coop.
but it has always been considered one of the best vacation spots for many Victorians and fellow Australians.
Lakes Entrance gets its name from the man made entrance to the ocean which during rough
conditions has caused disasters for a number of fishing craft.
Originally named Cunninghame, the Post Office of that name opening
on 5 February 1870. the name was changed to Lakes Entrance on 1 January 1915.

Scenic Views

1) Before you actually reach Lakes Entrance you pass through a small town of Kalimna, ask your driver to stop at the look-out overlooking the Lakes and the ocean. It will blow your mind !

On a clear day you can even see the Oil rigs in Bass Strait!

2) Walking , hmmm now let me see what sort of walking do you like?

Okk i'll start off easy lol. How does a nice walk along the walking path past the fishing boats seeing the professional fisherman getting their trawlers ready for action, admire the sculptures made from tree trunks by a local artist. to honor the people who fought to preserve our country,  watching the pelicans and swans feeding and squabbling over who gets the juiciest fish. They don't realise that there is plenty for all.

All right you say I want something a bit harder. You got it! but be warned take a water bottle with you ! First take a leisure stroll across the Lake on the foot bridge till you reach the sand.

See the life saving unit sitting on top of the sand dune, that's your target. Walk up over the dune and take a deep breath and gulp in all of that beautiful sea air. Hmmmm how are we going so far?

Now look both ways along the sandy beaches, see anyone ?, I didn't think you would !

Isn't solitude great, hear the ocean crashing, what power, what beauty !.

Had enough of a walk yet ? Well if you have a slack three hours just turn right and head off towards the Entrance where you will see the Trawlers come in across the bar to the safety of the lakes. But be warned although well worth it , this walk is not for the faint hearted.

On this walk you will see a lot of the history that made Lakes Entrance what it is today. You will see the entrance as it was constructed so many years ago. You will see some of the old machinery that was used and left to rust, now used as a testimonial to the hard work carrying out this massive battle against the power of the ocean.

On the lake side of your walk you will see some of the old cottages and history of what made Lakes Entrance so popular with some of Australia's most famous artists.

3) Did I happen to mention fishing in Lakes Entrance ? I'm sure I did somewhere!

In Lakes Entrance the keen angler is spoiled for choices.

You can simply , as I have done on many occasion, just grab a cheap fishing kit from one of the many Fishing Gear shops in Lakes Entrance, it will even be rigged for you. walk over to the water and throw in a line. There is literally miles of shore line you can fish, from the sandy shore of the lakes, one of the many jetties and piers . If you are a little more adventurous you can walk over the foot bridge and try your hand at surf fishing.

There are also boats for hire where you can travel up and down the length of the Lakes network and try any fishing spot you fancy.

If you are feeling really adventurous and brave you can pay your money and try your hand on one of the ocean going trawlers.

I hope your remembered to pack your bathers because the Lakes offer swimmers a choice of indoor pool with giant slide , great fun for the kids. There is also for the more outdoor types among us a great safe beach to swim for the kids with paddle boats close by for all to enjoy.

Then only a short distance away for those of us who like to surf, you will find a great surf beach for body surfing, just the thing to blow those cobwebs away. During the season all of these beaches are patrolled by life savers.

Now did you pack your Golf Clubs, no , well don't worry you can hire a set. At Lakes Entrance you will find Golf Courses that has been rated one of the best in Australia.

Lakes Entrance Golf Club

As well as big guys golf there are a number of mini-golf establshments around the town.

Boating as apart from fishing is very big in this area and you will see pulling up to the wharves all shapes and size of boats .  You will see small trailer-sailers coming in so their owners can just walk across the road to replenish their galleys.  You will see the multi-million dollars cruisers moored in their permanent spots.  And you will see yachts of all dimensions coming and going on the waters of the lakes.

There is also provisions for the water skiers among us and the waters of the lakes are just right for the newbie or the experienced skier.

Lazin' about

4)  "Hmmm"  I hear you say "All this activity, it makes me tired"  Alright you deserve a break !

Lets just take a leisurely walk down to the shopping pricinct of the Lakes.  Pick out a nice little cafe , take your pick of the variety of beverages available. I'll have a nice lite latte thankyou :-)

Now we will just pop out onto the outside chairs , sit back and relax, chat and watch the activity going on around us.   When we have finished our coffee and meal if that is your want , just wander along and brouse through the many small shops along the Esplanade for some retail therapy.

5) Alright you have done all of the energetic stuff and you have developed quite and appetite, In other words you and yours need to eat. You will not be dissappointed!

Yes Lakes Entrance does have your McDonalds and your KFC's for fast foods, but they also have a variety of local cafes and restaurants. If you are not familiar with the Australian Fish and Chip shop, just pop into one of the few here and ask them for a Flake and Chips, It will come wrapped in butchers paper to take away. You and yours then walk over the road and eat it on the large expanse of grass and maybe sharing with the seagulls and pelicans.

Moving up market , there are many fine restaurants along the Esplanade, depending on your choice of cuisine you are sure to find one to your taste.

You will find that all sporting clubs and hotels also have meals available at reasonable costs.

Entertainment in Lakes Entrance

You may want to catch a movie at the Local Theatre in Lakes Entrance , it shows all of the latest movies.

There are a number of clubs such as the Bowls Club , the Golf Club and the RSL who have scheduled live shows and also poker machines where you can while away some hours.

If you want to spend some relaxing time on the water just wander over to the wharves and check out the Cruise boats.  You are sure to find one that will suit your time table and will take you on a lovely relaxing tour of the lakes .
