Vernazza

Vernazza is a northwest Italian community with 950 inhabitants in the province of La Spezia in the Ligurian coast of Italy. The municipality is the second northernmost of the five villages of the Cinque Terre.

Vernazza is one of the most preserved fishing village on the Italian Riviera. The village was founded around the year 1000.

Vernazza was hit by heavy rains and flooding on October 25, 2011, which caused significant damage to the facades and buildings.

The nearby village on the further south is Corniglia, also one of the Cinque Terre, forms politically a fraction of Vernazza.

The boat ride takes 1 hour and 50 minutes from La Spezia to Vernazza. In our option, we started our whole day boat tour from Levanto which is 40 minutes to Vernazza.

Vernazza has a railway station on the railway line Pisa-Genoa, which connects the place with the neighboring villages and with La Spezia and Sestri Levante.

Other means of visiting Vernazza is through the trail walk and by bus.

The small piazza on the sea with typical Ligurian houses gives fascinating picturesque, the port of Vernazza, the small sandy beach for swimming, the cliff were restaurant and houses were built.

The church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, dedicated to the patron saint of the parish was built in the first half of the 13th century.

The Doria Castle: dates from 11th century, an irregularly cylindrical tower rises in the middle of the quadrangular foundation. The castle is located on a rocky outcrop and from here you have a beautiful view of the village, the bay with the harbor and the open sea.

The Watchtower: at the beginning of the path to Corniglia there is a tower, probably from the same period as the castle.
