Visiting Bar Harbor, ME
Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is absolutely a must stop spot for anyone traveling to Maine. The lobster, the whales, the nature- it all adds up to be a great time. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or even a family vacation. I'm going to break down all the places you'll want to check out on your visit here.
Stay
There are plenty of hotels and inns located in Bar Harbor, but only a select few with must see views and amenities. If you're up for a more nature oriented stay you can also looking into camping right in the Acadia National Park. Let's go over a few of my favorite spots to stay at in Bar Harbor.
The West Street Hotel
This one is definitely my top pick for hotels in Bar Harbor. Located right in down town across from the Mt Dessert Narrows, with views of Frenchman Bay and Bar Island, it can be sure to not disappoint. But if the views don't have you completely sold, you can also be sure to enjoy their adults only roof top infinity pool! This pool offers relaxing views along with refreshments available in the afternoon till close. After the pool you can head down stairs to Paddy's Irish Pub & Restaurant for great service and live music. The hotel and restaurant's modern and sleek design will be sure to exceed all expectations. Link for this hotel is listed below.
Bar Harbor Inn
A great option located right on the water in down town. This Inn offers a state of the art spa where you can be sure to unwind and relax with a variety of massage, treatments, and services. After receiving a massage or facial head down to grab dinner at the Terrace Grille Restaurant or Reading Room Restaurant. Both indoor and outdoor options provide ocean views and culinary delights. Be sure to check out their packages that include, but aren't limited too, Acadia National Park and Relax by the Bay. Link for this hotel is listed below.
Bar Harbor Regency
If you're looking for something out of down town but still breath taking in the views-the Regency is the place for you. You can hang out by the pool and Tiki Bar for some day time fun, or dine in La Bella Vita for some classic pasta dishes. If you're looking to have some lobster you can head down to the water front to Stewman's Lobster Pound (there is also one down town- you can read up on it in the next section). There is a variety of amenities available here as well, including a health club and tennis courts. Or maybe you can take a relaxing stroll down the waterfront walking path. Link for this hotel is listed below.
Mount Desert Campground
Feel like getting a little more acquainted with nature during your stay? This campground offers a great amount of amenities to make your experience perfect. Check out their water front campsites as well as their canoe and kayak rentals. You can even bring your four legged friend during the off season (no dogs are allowed in July & August). Dine & Drink
Whether you're looking to grab a variety of lobster dishes or enjoy a craft beer- Bar Harbor has you covered. There are plenty of hidden gems in this town that are sure to leave you wanting more.
Stewman's Lobster Pound
Located right on the water front serving fresh caught, never frozen, Maine lobster. What more could you ask for when looking for a great traditional Maine meal? With a laid back atmosphere and high level of fast pace service, you can bet that you will enjoy your dining experience. Your four legged friends are also welcomed to dine in the outside seating areas!
Leary's Landing Irish Pub
Another great spot to hit that is nestled in down town bar harbor. A great selection of beer and spirits with a light pub menu. If you're looking to grab a few friends, play some table top games and throw a few back, this laid back pub has you covered. The bartenders and owners are especially accommodating and knowledgeable about bar harbor as well. You can also check out their other restaurant, Project Social, right next door!
Cottage St. Pub
This bar has to be one of my favorites and most creative when it comes to drinks. Tucked away right off cottage street with an inside bar and some outside seating- there is a drink here for everyone. Be sure to get there early as space is limited and sure to be packed on any night during prime season. Try the Dirty Water or Drunken Tea!

Asticou Azalea Garden
This particular garden is a must see any time of year. The picture below is what it looked like in October- still colorful and full of life. Take a relaxing walk with your significant other and enjoy the beauty the Asticou Azalea Garden has to offer. The Thuya Garden is also a huge hit but more of a spring/summer spot. You can check out more about the gardens in the Links listed below!
Jordan Pond House
Located in Acadia National Park with great mountain and pond views. There are also some dining options available here as well. The tea and pop overs are a must for historical stops- I can attest for just how delicious they are. They have been serving pop overs and tea since the 1890's, so you can be sure that they've got the recipes down pact. Enjoy a light lunch and take a stroll around the pond house on the trails (a great family spot).
Thunder Hole
A great visiting spot for tourist to hear and experience the thunderous sounds of the ocean. You can really experience thunder hole at it's peak after a storm, or between high tide and low tide. Please note, that you should always stay within the viewing areas as it can be dangerous to view outside of them.
The Precipice Trail
If you are an avid hiker and are looking for a challenging hike, the precipice trail is a must. I would absolutely suggest starting with Beehive before taking on this trail, as it can be dangerous and challenging. The metal rungs and small bridges add a great effect to this trail and the view from up top is absolutely worth the hike. Check out the picture below to see a shot during my hike with friends on the trail.
Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co.
A great family activity and with a variety of tours available. If you're looking to see some wild life on your visit, the bar harbor nature and sightseeing cruise is a must. Or maybe you're looking to relax with a drink in your hand? In which case, the sunset happy hour and nature cruise is a perfect match for you. Check out the rates and tours listed in the Link below!
