Walking Through The Park

Updated on August 18, 2011

I live in the city of Carlisle in the United Kingdom, it is a historic city that boasts the first ever post box in Britain, a castle and a beautiful cathedral along with an old victorian market hall.

However we have a lot of park land that surrounds the city and three rivers which flow through it, my favourite park in the city is Rickerby Park, which is situated along the River Eden. It is the most beautiful part of my city.

I am lucky as I only live 5 minutes walk from here, and see it every day, I walk here every morning and evening, I would recommend it to any one who visits my city.
On my way to the park I have to walk a long an old street that you can see with the most beautiful church on the hill that towers above the park when you descend to the river.

Inside the park the river flows silently, there is a lot of greenery and the most beautiful trees that tower up in to the sky, its like being in a whole new different world right in your back yard. Walking further into the park, you will be struck by the beauty of the river, you know it could be raining the river looks different, when its sunny the river is different again, any season any type of weather and wow its like a whole new world opening its doors to you.

Deep inside the park there is a memorial dedicated to the many brave men who gave their lives in the many battles and wars including the first world war 1914 - 1918 and the second world war 1939 - 1945. Its a very beautiful tall tower surrounded by a private park within the park.

On the other side of the park there is a bridge - Eden Bridge it is called as it crosses the river there are some beautiful arches but one you can actually walk under that reveals a hidden park behind it and a beautiful path that leads along the river hidden by trees, then opens out on to the cricket pitch.

These are only some of the pictures that I have taken over the years but if you are thinking of visiting my City the walk around this park is breathtaking. On a warm day you can sit next to the river and and have a picnic, when it rains you can smell the clean air and the many scents and aromas that the trees and plants give off.

I would recommend to any one to walk through Rickerby Park just once, I find inspiration for my hubs by walking through here, I hope that you like the views...

Beautiful pictures and great info Callum. Have to debate the post box issue though, the first ones were in the British Channel Islands, later followed by the British mainland, quote from Wiki:

"The first pillar boxes in Britain were introduced in the Channel Islands as an experiment in 1852. Anthony Trollope, the novelist, who was employed by the General Post Office, trialled pillar boxes in the Channel Islands before introducing them into mainland Britain"

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernsey_Post

I guess yours could be the first on the British mainland though ;)

The Oasis I live in reminds me of England other than the fact things have a rough hue here. Photographs taken have shown the spoiling of nature. I never really saw it until the photo's brought it to my attention. It is amazing how looking through a lens can change things. It is still beautiful to me and always will be.

You have me missing mountains again. Forests will always be my favorite place. This said by a man who has lived on the great plains for seven years now. I spent the majority of my childhood both looking at and living in forests. As an adult I spent most of my time living a mile or more above sea level surrounded by forest.

I have so many more pictures on my facebook, You would love my park and city we are surrounded by greenery and unspoiled landscapes that have breathtaking views. With the lake district a mere 10 miles and the mountains only 5 miles from the city we are so very spoiled. There are three rivers in my city yet the one you can see is by far the largest, known as the River Eden. There are so many things to see in Carlisle we are steeped in history, surrounded by mountains and greenery and every picture would make a stunning post card.

How I wish I could also visit your place and enjoy seeing the beauty of the rivers and the parks. Thanks for writing an article about your city and for sharing some pictures of it. Now I can imagine myself walking in the grassland beside the river and enjoying the magnificent view of the place.

Maybe, someday, If I have lots of money to travel around the world, I would choose your place as my first destination.LOL.=)

      Hi Danette

I certainly agree there, I love walking and hiking, I some go into the mountains near where I live for inspiration too but the park I have to admit is also tranquil and really meditative, and also therapeutic to given the person a sense of calm and inner peace being one with nature....... I love it. Thanks for commenting.

Beautiful hub! I love that this is a familiar walk for you that you take near your home. Your photos are wonderful as well, my favorite is the arched bridge with a gate below.

Calpol! great hub. I miss England. I thought it was interesting to read about your mention of the world wars. Historically I forget sometimes how small the world is. I loved the photos. I could almost feel the snap in the air.
